Recapitulemos: El Liverpool no camina sólo, con un 65% de victorias en lo que va de temporada, perdiendo apenas una sóla vez. El Aston Villa ha sorprendido a los incautos y se ha trepado entre los primeros. El Manchester City sigue en la zona alta, sin despegarse mucho, esperando una oportunidad. Arsenal y Tottenham han perdido impulso. Y los demás, resolviendo sus propios problemas en casa. Ahora, llegan de nuevo los compromisos y deberán demostrar si les resultó provechoso la pausa para competir por las copas domésticas.

NEWCASTLE vs. MANCHESTER CITY

NEWCASTLE fue la última víctima del líder, cayendo en Anfield 4-2, extendiendo la racha negativa a tres derrotas. En ése período marcó tres goles y permitió ocho en contra. Aunque algunos pudieran atribuírle eso a las bajas por salud en el mediocampo, el portero titular y delantera, lo cierto es aún tienen algo de buen nivel en la cancha. El joven Gordon es uno de los mejores elementos que vemos en cada compromiso, así como también el paraguayo Almirón. Sin embargo, a la lista de ausencias se ha sumado recientemente Joelinton, quien podría regresar a finales de febrero o principios de marzo. Alexander Isak también está dando luces del nivel que los seguidores están esperando. Éstos son parte de los pilares en que se podría apoyar el equipo en la parte ofensiva en la reanudación del trabajo, mientras se ve en el horizonte una posible salida de Guimaraes, quien aporta tanto en la conducción y distribución de la esférica.

MANCHESTER CITY vuelve a centrar su atención en la liga luego de coronarse en el último mundial de clubes. Los ciudadanos están en plena recuperación luego de su última derrota en manos del Aston Villa, y se han mantenido invictos, con tres victorias y un empate. Es verdad, a muchos le llama la atención la ausencia de Haaland, pero éste equipo es mucho más que sólo el noruego, y no tardan en usar todos los recursos disponibles para continuar defendiendo el título. La otra novedad es que Stones tampoco estará disponible en éste duelo. Ya vimos en la banca a de Bruyne lo cual es una buena noticia para continuar con el juego vistoso de posesión. Estos son tres puntos importantes para ellos porque los mantiene con la posibilidad de mantenerse a sólo dos puntos de los reds cuando se pongan al día con el partido pendiente.

En la jornada 2 ya se enfrentaron, y la victoria fue para el Manchester City por la mínima diferencia. La última vez en St. James Park fue un empate. Ahora, si abrimos el abanico y vemos los últimos tres duelos en ese escenario, el visitante ha marcado 11 goles, promediando más de tres goles por encuentro, así que llega nada intimidado.

MANCHESTER UNITED vs. TOTTENHAM

MANCHESTER UNITED volvió a perder en el último compromiso ante el Forest 2-1. En las últimas cinco fechas apenas ha ganado una sola vez, pero ha perdido tres de ellos. Ha ganado sólo cuatro de esos quince puntos ganados. Eso sigue haciendo que crezca la nube negra encima del actual entrenador. Algunos están en contra y piden su salida, pero ante los microfonos sigue alegando que está respaldado por la directiva. Sin embargo, sabemos que ésto a veces no es un impedimento, y por "mutuo acuerdo" ambas partes deciden cortar la relación, priorizando los intereses del equipo. Mientras tanto siguen sucediendo los movimientos. Por ejemplo, Reguilón ha vuelto al Tottenham, y van de Beek ha sido cedido a Alemania. Parece que los diablos rojos están más interesados en que la gente se vaya que la gente que pudiera llegar, al menos en ésta ventana de traspasos. ¿Qué hace falta para que éste Manchester salte de la octava posición al Top 4?

TOTTENHAMlucha por tratar de volver a tomar el rumbo a un buen puerto. Volvió a ganar, ésta vez al Bournemouth. Ha ganado doce de los últimos quince puntos jugados. Ahora bien, está por verse cómo armará su juego sin su estrella Son, quien se ha marchado para cumplir con sus compromisos internacionales junto a su selección. Su segundo capitán estará a cargo. Pero en cuanto al puesto vacante, la solución se llama Timo Werner. ¿De verdad es la solución? En su paso por el Chelsea no mostró ser el delantero sobresaliente que era en su país. Por eso, asaltan las dudas sobre su adaptación a la liga en ésta nueva etapa, donde también los centrales son fornidos y altos. Recordemos que él no es alto. También, Radu Dragusin ha llegado para platarse como defensa central y permitir que Postecoglou deje de improvisar en esa zona. La intención de los spurs es no perder más terreno, y volver a combatir para meterse en los puestos que lo llevan a la Champions.

Al principio de la temporada la victoria fue para el Tottenham. Sin embargo, los diablos rojos tienen números intersantes en Old Trafford cuando reciben a los spurs, en vista que tienen un 70% de victorias y apenas un 16% de derrotas en su historial completo. Necesitan que cambien muchas cosas para que ésto se revierta.

ARSENAL vs. CRYSTAL PALACE

ARSENAL perdió su último derby de Londres ante el Fulham, y ahora vuelve a tener un derby en su ciudad, ésta vez ante el Crystal Palace. Los gunners son acusados de haber perdido efectividad frente al arco. Y para demostrarlo recurren a la frialdad de los números, y ellos a veces son crueles. En los últimos tres partidos han disparado más de 60 veces y apenas han marcado un gol. ¿Cuál es la solución? Mikel Arteta pensó que estaría bien irse a la playa. Así es, mientras yo estoy escribiendo ésto y tú lo estás leyendo, los jugadores y personal técnico del Arsenal se han ido a Dubai para pasar unos días en familia y desconectarse de las competiciones, buscando más bien conectarse mejor unos con otros. Es de esperar que cuando vuelvan a Londres traigan consigo una mejor actitud y mentalidad que acompañe a su broceado de piel. No estamos seguros de que Zinchenko y Gabriel Jesús puedan estar listos para jugar. Ojalá en la playa no los pique algo en el agua.

CRYSTAL PALACE pudo vencer al incómodo Brentford en la última jornada, dando fin a la mala racha que llevaban de ocho partidos sin ganar. Atrás quedaron los tres empates y cinco derrotas, sin embargo, las repercusiones de eso están vigentes. Desde el decimocuarto puesto de la tabla planifican la forma de mantenerse a salvo, lejos de la zona de descenso. Las águilas son uno de los ausentes en el departamento de los goles anotados desde afuera del área. Eso habla un poco de los ajustes que son necesarios para que puedan mantenerse a flote. Tal vez uno de los aspectos que ha logrado conservar es con los goles en contra, una sóla vez ha caído por goleada en ésta campaña, permitiéndose tener los mismos goles en contra de equipos como el Tottenham y el Newcastle, y menos que el Chelsea.

Los últimos cinco encuentros con el Arsenal como local ha terminado con una victoria para cada lado y tres empates. Sin embargo, en la temporada pasada, el Arsenal ganó los dos encuentros pertinentes. Para ver éste nuevo episodio tendremos que esperar hasta el 20 de enero.

EL JUGADOR

JULIÁN ÁLVAREZ se viste de heroe en ésta nueva ausencia del goleador titular. A pesar de que ha empezado todos los partidos de la Premier, ahora tiene un papel más protagónico y no ha defraudado. En los últimos cuatro encuentros ha anotado dos goles y dado una asistencia. Ha jugado los noventa minutos reglamentarios demostrando que su entrenador tiene plena confianza en él. El 40% de sus disparos van al arco, aumentando las probabilidades de escribir su nombre en el marcador. Estaremos atentos de su actuación.

NEWCASTLE were the leaders' latest victims, losing 4-2 at Anfield, extending their losing streak to three defeats. In that period they scored three goals and allowed eight conceded. Although some might attribute that to fitness issues in midfield, the starting goalkeeper and up front, the truth is they still have some good form on the pitch. The young Gordon is one of the best elements we see in every game, as well as the Paraguayan Almiron. However, the list of absentees has recently been joined by Joelinton, who could return at the end of February or early March. Alexander Isak is also showing signs of the level that fans are expecting. These are part of the pillars on which the team could rely on the offensive part in the resumption of work, while a possible departure of Guimaraes, who contributes so much in driving and distributing the ball, is on the horizon.

MANCHESTER CITY is turning its attention back to the league after being crowned at the last Club World Cup. The Citizens are on the mend after their last defeat at the hands of Aston Villa, and have remained unbeaten with three wins and a draw. Now, if we open the fan and look at the last three duels at that venue, the visitors have scored 11 goals, averaging more than three goals per game, so they come in not at all intimidated.

MANCHESTER UNITED vs. TOTTENHAM

Hopefully on the beach they won't get bitten by something in the water.

CRYSTAL PALACE were able to beat struggling Brentford last time out, ending their eight-game winless streak. Gone are the three draws and five defeats, however, the repercussions of that are still with them. From fourteenth place in the table, they are planning how to stay safely away from the relegation zone. The Eagles are one of the absentees in the goals scored from outside the box department. That speaks a bit to the adjustments that are necessary for them to stay afloat. Perhaps one of the aspects they have managed to conserve is with goals conceded, only once have they lost by a landslide this season, allowing themselves to have the same goals against as teams like Tottenham and Newcastle, and fewer than Chelsea.

Arsenal's last five home games have ended with one win for each side and three draws. However, last season, Arsenal won both relevant matches. To see this new episode we will have to wait until January 20.

THE PLAYER

JULIÁN ÁLVAREZ is the hero in this new absence of the first-choice striker. Although he has started every game in the Premier League, he now has a more prominent role and has not disappointed. In the last four games he has scored two goals and provided one assist. He has played the full ninety minutes proving that his manager has full confidence in him. Forty percent of his shots are on target, increasing his chances of getting his name on the scoreboard. We will keep an eye on his performance.
