A round of golf at New Forest Golf Course in Ireland

A great day out

You all know here on Sports Talk Social already that I am sports mad, and that the only thing I like more than watching Sports is playing Sports. Sure watching sports is great, and I love to watch Arsenal, Ireland and Galway United play soccer, Galway play the Irish traditional sports of Hurling and Gaelic football or watch Ireland play rugby, and we are actually the world number one team at the moment, following our historic grand slam win and brilliant recent wins over the usual world number one team New Zealand. The great thing about that is that it is a World Cup year, so everyone in Ireland is really hoping that we give it a right old go this year, but we have a tough group with Scotland, South Africa, Romania and Tonga, so it will not be plain sailing.

This post is not meant to about rugby though, or soccer or GAA, it is about golf and about a really nice track that I played recently called New Forest Golf Club.

Here is the view that greets you as you drive in the front gate.

They host weddings here sometimes, as you can see they have a nice little courtyard as you walk towards the pro shop.

Here are some of the local sponsors of the golf club, which I thought was a nice touch by them.

Finally here is the view from the first tee box, which is a nice par 4, with trouble down both the left and right sides, I pulled my drive badly right, so had to play my 3rd shot from the tee, which is never a good way to start a round of golf, but I managed to par the second ball, so had a 6 to start, which was not bad considering I had a lost ball.

A Peak around the course

I must say I was very impressed overall with the course and particularly the greens which were in exceptional condition and were very undulating, leaving me with lots of breaking putts which is always a good challenge. There is a certain Augusta like feel to some of the holes at New Forest, as you can end up with left or right lying lies, as well as downhill and uphill lies, such is the nature of the undulating drumlin based terrain of the course.

Here are some of the photos from around the course. Starting off with this one on the eight green. I hit a tasty drive down the middle of the fairway and then hit my second from 167 yards into the wind with my 6 iron and left it around six feet for birdie.

Did I make the putt? Of course I made the putt!! Ha ha, lucky enough there was no break so I could stroke it in nice and firm into the back of the hole.

The ninth is a really quirky par 3 hole, playing around 120 yards, it is index 18 and it is inside a walled garden, which is quite something. Here is the archway into that hole.

I really enjoyed playing here and managed to get 29 points, which was not bad considering I lost 5 golf balls, yes 5 golf balls!! The rough is extremely high here and if you pull it left or right, it is game over for your golf ball!

The photos used are all my own captured on my trusty Samsung smart phone

Thanks a million for stopping by

Peace out.

Man, that course looks superb and the greens and fairways look so nice. I can just imagine the crisp wedge into the green. You are so lucky, it is winter here and the fairways are mostly dead. It helps with hitting it far though! I only have a 2 iron at the moment so I can do with the extra rollout. Enjoy and keep well my friend! Cheers.

Do you know something, I have only played there a few times, but it is a hidden gem to be honest and a real bargain at €25 for the Open competition! It reminded me a lot of Augusta, with super fast and undulating green and lots of slopes and various side slope, upslope and downslope lies on the fairways. The rough was unforgiving too, and extremely long, so any errant shots were in serious bother. It was very very enjoyable, we are in peak golf season here now, April through September are great golf months in Ireland, with May to August often being the premium months.

That is awesome, my friend! You are really lucky! I envy you, as you described the course sounded like a dream to play, and for that price (I presume) a steal! The greens sound like a nightmare though, as I have played those types of courses and the greens are never forgiving! At least for me, when some nerves get into my hands, I am dead on fast greens.

The greens were slippery for sure, but the most penal part was the waist high grass awaiting you if you pulled it or pushed it on certain holes. It really was a great track though and seriously good value as you say 👌

Oh that is the death of me. When you hit it into the rough and you cannot find your ball. Maybe one day we will have GPS location trackers in our golf balls and we will never have another lost ball hiding behind a stuborn leaf or patch of grass.

Ya I always wonder why those balls aren't in existence yet. Maybe the manufacturers make so much money of people losing balls, that they don't want to do it. It might take a new comer with distruptive technology to do it.

Losing good drives just off fairways is a killer and I've had a few lately 🙈

For sure! I wish for those balls because sometimes you hit a bomber of a drive and you hit it further than usual and you lose the ball and lose hope to play that hole well haha. Lets begin a go fund me or something! I know that feeling. Its the worst. But hey its golf! Gotta love it either way.

That's a helluva nice looking golf course! That must be a fantastic place to play. Sounds like you had a really good time, too, despite the five lost balls! I hope you treated yourself with a beer afterward.

Ya I must say now, I really enjoyed, it was a really good test and no two holes were similar, lots of feature and variance which I like in a golf course. Thanks for stopping by..

I am currently thinking myself starting to golf. Waht are the overall costs involved in this sport?

How long is a piece of string?

There's a huge variance depending on the country, golf equipment quality, ball quality etc.

For example where I live in Galway, Ireland one club requires €12K just to join. Others just have yearly subs of anywhere from €600 to €1400.

Golf Clubs can be as expensive as €600 for a top driver, €470 for a top putter and that's just 2 Clubs out of 14 your allowed have in the bag. There are beginner sets that will cost you around €200-€400 also.

Golf balls can vary from €5 a ball for Prov1s or AVXs to €1.50 a ball for cheaper ones.
