Out with the old, in with the new and K Club Golf

Time for a change

When you win a golf competition or indeed at my club, if you finish in the top ten, you win a prize. Typically that prize is a voucher for the Pro Shop where you can buy balls, clothes, clubs, shoes and everything in between.

There's also a twos club, where you pay €2 before every round and if you get a 2 on a par 3 you win the pot or as is almost always the case, a portion of the pot.

Over the years, I've had my fair share of wins and twos, and here are some of the things I've bought with these winnings:

  • Ping G410 Driver
  • Scotty Cameron Futura
  • Bushnell Range Finder

That's around €1200 of equipment that I've effectively won and last week I added 2 x Titliest Vokey wedges to the collection, as I got rid of my old ones.

When you are hitting your wedges well, there are few more pleasing clubs to hit and of the 14 clubs that I'm allowed to carry, I carry 5 wedges - Pitching wedge, Gap wedge, 54° wedge, 56° wedge and 60° wedge.

Here are some photos I took of the old and new clubs together as I am trying to offload my old ones for a few Bob.

Practice and finding a few balls

There is a par 5 hole on my local golf course, where I play every Sunday and regularly players including myself get in trouble and lose golf balls. There is a big dogleg where the sensible play is a long iron or even a 3 wood up the middle, but many players opt for the big dog Driver and and slight pull left will leave you in the trees. Most rounds you'll see folks hitting at least one ball in there.

So when time allows on a practice round, I'll spend five minutes having a quick spy for some errant balls. It's not unusual for that dive minutes to turn up twenty golf balls and if I'm extra lucky there will be a few Titliest Pro V1 balls amongst them, those are the balls I like to play with but they cost €50 to €60 for a dozen, so finding them is far more pleasing!

Just over that wall in the photos is where I spend that five minutes.

This early morning round turned up a whopping 39 balls, not too shabby at all!! There were 7 Pro V1s too, which was even better news and only 8 "shite balls" for chipping around the garden.

I don't play my Titliest Pro V1s durinf the mucky and unpredictable Winter months, and instead I leave them aside for Spring, Summer and Autumn golf. Here is my current haul of recent finds of Prov1 from this Winter, not too shabby at all!

I can't wait to see what faith awaits these golf balls this year, I wonder how many pars and birdies they will lead and will there be any eagles? I had two last year in successive weeks in our Tuesday Open golf competitions.

Irish Golfer Competitions

I've played at a few Irish Golfer events before and they are a great day out I must say. It's as close to Professional golf as I'll get I reckon. The courses below are all very good and I've played around half of them before.

My friend and I just booked the K Club for April 28th, which I'm really looking forward to. That's where they played the 2006 Ryder Cup, so it's a fantastic golf estate with two magnificent 18 holes courses. Bring it on! One of my trustee Pro V1 balls will be used that day and hopefully just the one!

This is what they have to say about it.

The Irish Golfer Experience

Irish Golfer Events give you the full Tour experience. The events are run to a full professional standard and include all the extras! Each player is announced on the first tee and receives a welcome gift on arrival (baseball cap & 2 ball sleeve of TaylorMade Tour Response balls) plus fruit, drinks, nutrition snacks, tees, pencils and accessories are all free for players. Add in the prizes and you’ve got a great day out!

Sláinte and Peace out.

Some of those clubs have had some usage by the looks of it. Nice haul you found there in the bushes too.

I have picked this post on behalf of the @OurPick project which will be highlighted in the next post! Comment Footer.jpg

Ya man lots of use over the years, and I actually picked up the 56 degree second hand, so that one has even more use over the years!

Nice haul you've won! Stuff ain't cheap at all. I wish I had the patience for golf. Its all about technique and not power, and that's just something I cannot get in my head properly!! Have you ever played at a proper golf simulator? Fun with a few drinks

Ya not a bad haul over the years, always nice to win or finish in the prizes, as you know that you game is on point, which is a really good feeling, my PB is 83 - I am targeting a score in the 70s this year, a feat only 10% of golfers ever manage to achieve.

wow! 70's would be huge. Top 10% is amazing mate. Great to see you've got a target as well you're aiming to hit. Is that a stretch target or do you feel you're very close by? I'm not too sure how hard it is to get that extra little bit that you need

I don't think it's a stretch target, the way I have been playing I reckon I can get to 78 or 79 this year. I'd be delighted to make it into the 70s. 60s now that's another ball game, I doubt I'll ever join that club!

Ya it's a tricky sport to take up, but as with everything, practice makes perfect, so you have to put in hours and lots of them, but that feeling when you make birdies and eagles really makes it worth it.

Pretty decent as this starts to add up. Don't get me onto golf balls as we used to live next door with a boundary wall running along the 13th par 5. On average when golf was being played anywhere between 30 and 50 golf balls per day would end up on the property. There was some close misses like one landed next to me whilst I was in the swimming pool. Another embedded itself into the thatched roof but the pool was the main catchment area. I gave most of them away, but reckon I have a few thousand lying around somewhere.

Holy shit that's a serious pain in the arse! and dangerous too..

You could probably sell those thousands of balls, especially if there are any decent ones amongst them, which people would pay €1 each for second hand..

Danger is my middle name lol. It was seriously dangerous on Wednesdays and Saturdays when they had the course full as our house sat at the end of a dog leg and if you hit it straight they would find us. I was amazed at how many balls found our property until I played the course and hit one into the pool. I knew this as I retrieved it when I got home lol. Most are ProV1's and are basically brand new so yes they are worth something. I used them for practicing my putting and chipping after hours when the course was closed which was one of the perks living next door.

Sweet!! That is a quality perk, but balls raining down on you when you are trying to chill in your back garden is a nightmare. Majority ProV1s.... Nice.. That's another perk :)

Downside was the crime coming from the golf course side of the property via break ins. Many nights some of us would be out playing a mini tournament using torches as we had to show who was boss in the area. The caddies were the crooks mainly as I used to stand guard over the weekends from Friday to Sunday night and prevented break ins. The next door neighbors were done over 7 times each and our house not once. The week we moved the new occupants were robbed so they were watching and new.

No shit! That must have been a serious pain in ass, especially for those folks that got done 7 times, ouch!
