He Never Gave Up

I stayed up late to watch the second golf major of the year unfold tonight and unfold it did it was like a soap opera at times.

Let's spare a thought for poor old Mito Pereira from Chile who played well all week and although playing with the handbrake on at times, found himself desperately close to winning.

Things don't often get interesting until the Sunday of major championships, as they players spend three days and 54 holes of golf jokeying for position. In fact more often than not things don't spring to life until the back 9 on Sunday and today proved no different.

Pereira, Fitzpatrick and Young battled it out at the front of the field and some cagey pros plotting attacks from further back in the field with McIlroy and Thomas in particular having a good go.

McIlroy was unable to sustain it, but Thomas on the other hand kept his nerve and posted a really impressive 67, while the guys near the top of the leaderboard struggled to +3, +5 and +1 rounds, which very much opened the door for Thomas. However after hitting a monster drive down 18 and hitting his second to 8 feet, he missed the putt and cursed himself. He felt he had surely blown his chance.

Up steps Pereira

He held a one shot lead stepping up to the tee and hit a very strange tee shot, trying to hit a stinger down the fairway. It was a bad swing, a rushed swing and low and behold, it ended up wet and in a stream. From there on the wheels came off, he needed a five to make it into a playoff with Thomas and Zalatoris, but couldn't find it and instead carded a double bogey six and his race was run. It was tough on the young Chilean and no doubt he will be back again some day.

The Playoff

Thomas played amazingly well in the playoff. It was a three hole aggregate playoff on holes 13, 17 and 18.

They shared birdie 4s on the 13th, but it was the 17th that separated them in the end, JT hit a wonder 3 wood below.

He lagged up and then he made the putt below for birdie, with Zalatoris only able to par it.

Thomas hit another beauty down 18 and found the green with his second shot, meaning he would likely get two putts for the win and so it proved.

Zalatoris could only make a four, so Thomas two putted, and won the playoff and the major and I was delighted for him.

I was happy for Thomas as he seems like a nice guy, and also because I had a fiver on him to win 🏆🤑🤑

What a crazy closing day with all the leaders going up and down. The meltdown of Pereira, Zalatoris who cound't get his play into order.
Never thought that Justin would take the victory.

JT's experience showed in the end, he'd been there before and was not going to be phased by the enomority of the occasion. The younger guys wilted in the end and I thought JT was pure class in the playoff and Zalatoris played well just JT played better, some shot into the 17th
