It is a multipurpose stadium located in Nasr City, a suburb of the city of Cairo, capital of Egypt. It is the largest Olympic standards stadium in Africa and the Middle East. Its construction was completed in 1960, and was inaugurated by President Gamal Abdel Nasser during the national celebrations of July 23 of that year.
