Carlos Sainz. El inesperado (y merecido) mejor del resto — The unexpected and deserved best of the rest [ESP-ENG] #F1

In sport in general there is always room for surprises or unexpected winners. Without attracting much attention, while almost all eyes were on the fight between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, in the second half of the championship the Spanish driver Carlos Sainz, in his first year with the Ferrari team, managed to climb to the privileged 5th position in the drivers' championship, with only the 4 drivers of Mercedes and Red Bull in front of him, unreachable for the rest.

Before the start of the 2021 season, Ferrari's decision to hire the Spanish driver was widely questioned. Everything indicated that the "best of the rest" award would be between Charles Leclerc, Ferrari's star driver; Lando Norris, a young driver who started the year very strongly with McLaren; Daniel Ricciardo, the fast Australian driver recently arrived at McLaren, or perhaps some other surprise. Carlos Sainz arrived at Ferrari to replace none other than Sebastian Vettel.

It was clear that Leclerc, in the absence of Vettel, would be the team's lead driver in 2021. But drivers like Ricciardo were more attractive to the public eye to join the Italian team as Charles' teammate. However, Ferrari saw otherwise. Personally, I had my doubts, not just about the decision to hire Sainz, but about whether Leclerc had the maturity to lead the team, and therefore saw Ricciardo as the better option. But 2021 has made me see that I, and many others, were wrong.

Before his arrival to the McLaren team, Carlos Sainz was still remembered as Max Verstappen's former teammate who did not quite shine, as he spent a couple more years at Toro Rosso, unlike the Dutch driver who was already winning races when he moved up to Red Bull. Until not long ago, I didn't see Carlos Sainz as a driver capable of standing out, of fighting for podiums or even victories. I started to recognize his talent when he arrived at McLaren, but I still didn't see him as a driver in a team like Ferrari.

Perhaps the best thing that could have happened to Carlos Sainz in his career was to have left the Toro Rosso team. His time at Renault showed more of his potential as a driver. Looking at what has happened in 2021, it could be said that McLaren made a mistake by letting Sainz go and hiring Ricciardo. Sainz managed to overtake his teammate Leclerc in points in the last race, and also Norris, who had held that position almost all year. Although the difference in points between these 3 was very little, it was finally Sainz the winner, thanks to his great performance throughout the championship.

With a very solid Carlos Sainz, Ferrari has in 2022 two drivers capable of fighting for podium positions constantly, and perhaps for victories. If the 2022 changes benefit teams like Ferrari and McLaren over Red Bull and Mercedes, perhaps we could see a repeat of the 2007 season, with these four drivers (Sainz, Leclerc, Norris, Ricciardo) fighting for the title. Some time ago I mentioned that 2021 was Sainz's test to prove that he was not a driver of the bunch. And he has passed it resoundingly, not only did he match Leclerc in many races, but he surpassed him in points.

Carlos Sainz is a very consistent driver, he proved it in 2021 being many races within the points, and obtaining 4 podiums, many of them thanks to his consistency on track, avoiding problems and taking risks in their right measure. It is no coincidence that Sainz has not attracted much attention despite his several podiums. Very few at the beginning of the season saw him as the best of the rest at the end of the year. The Ferrari team has been very satisfied with his performance. And regarding one of the questions posed at the beginning, I have no doubt that Sainz is capable of fighting for and winning a championship if given the chance. I am sure that in 2022 he will get his first victory.

Saludos @franz54!
