Michigan Ends the Drought! The Wolverines Are the Kings of College Basketball (English/Spanish)

It was a highly anticipated final, and it finally put an end to a 37-year wait. In a final that was a true trench war at Lucas Oil Stadium, the University of Michigan achieved what seemed impossible: dethroning the two-time defending champions and claiming the national title after defeating UConn 69-63.

If anything defined this game, it wasn’t the offense, but the suffocating defense of Dusty May’s team. Michigan forced UConn to have one of its worst nights from the field (just 31% shooting). The Huskies, who were seeking a “three-peat,” crashed time and again against a wall that didn’t let them breathe for the entire second half.

Point guard Elliot Cadeau carried the team on his shoulders when the going got tough. With 19 points, including the three-pointer that broke Michigan’s scoring drought in the second half, Cadeau was named the Most Outstanding Player (MOP) of the Final Four. His ability to break down UConn’s defense was the key that unlocked the path to the trophy.

Special mention goes to Yaxel Lendeborg. Despite playing with an injured ankle, he scored crucial points down the stretch and showed why he is the heart and soul of this team. Michigan hadn’t won since 1989, and this group of young players finally brought glory back to Ann Arbor.

Dominance in the Paint: Michigan outscored UConn 32-22 in the paint, imposing their physicality.

The Wolverines were nearly perfect from the free-throw line (15 of 16), which thwarted any attempt by the Huskies to mount a comeback late in the game.

Although UConn cut the lead to just 4 points with 37 seconds left, Michigan kept its cool and sealed the game with free throws by Cadeau.

Without a doubt, this has been the March Madness I’ve enjoyed the most because I followed it a little earlier than usual, and honestly, it was a tournament that brought a lot of joy and excitement.
