First downtown market of the year - My Actifit Report Card: January 6 2026

Today was the first downtown market day of the year in the city where I live. When I woke up, I saw snow and felt grateful to everyone who still brought their goods to the market.

After taking care of some desk work, I headed there. Since it’s the beginning of the year, both the stalls and the visitors were a bit sparse, but I walked around with the feeling of “Thank you for coming! I'm looking forward to another year together.”

There’s my favorite Italian stall, and to my surprise, they had rapeseed greens and blossoms. Of course I bought some and used them right away for steamed sushi for my lunch. Such a nice green color!

I’ll turn the rest into pasta or risotto to enjoy with my family, and I set aside a small portion to blanch and preserve the color. I’m thinking of using it as a filling for Futomaki sushi rolls that I’ll bring to an artists’ meetup later this week.

Ah, markets really are wonderful. I’m looking forward to discovering what kinds of vegetables and local produce I’ll encounter throughout this year.

今日は私が住む街で今年最初のマーケットの日でした。朝起きると雪で、マーケットに品物を持ってきてくれるみなさんに感謝。事務仕事をしたあとマーケットに向かいました。年始ということもあって、スタンドもお客さんもまばらでしたが、今年一年もよろしく、お世話になりますという思いで見て歩きました。

大好きなイタリアのスタンドがあって、なんと菜の花がならんでいるではないですか！これは買わずにいられず、さっそくお昼に蒸し寿司に使いました。

残りはパスタかリゾットにして家族と食べて、少しだけ取り分けて茹でて色止めをして、今週のアーティストのミートアップに持っていく太巻きの具にできたらと考えています。

ああ、やっぱりマーケットっていいですね！今年もどんな野菜をはじめ地域の作物と出会えるのか楽しみです。
