El Clásico Mundial en sus cinco anteriores versiones ha sido un espectáculo de magnitudes extratosféricas en el mundo del béisbol. Comenzó en el 2006 como una innovación y ya se ha convertido en una vitrina para representar los colores de su nación y en este escrito rememoraremos la historia de nuestra selección cubana a menos de dos meses de la realización de la sexta edición
La primera edición del Clásico es catalogada como la mejor actuación de un equipo Cuba en estas lides, llegando a la final, que a la postre Japón se alzó con el título. El camino hacia la final no estuvo exento de polémica, pues en el primer desafío ante Panamá sucedió algo más que interesante que marcó el decursar de la nave antillana en el torneo y fue que en la novena entrada con las bases llenas de panameños y el juego empatado a seis carreras por bando, el entonces relevista cubano Yunieski Maya le encimó una recta al entonces big leaguer Carlos Lee y para sorpresa de los aficionados canaleros en el Hiram Bithorn el espigado y corpulento primera base no cogió el pelotazo. A partir de ese entonces de la mano de Yadel Martí, Pedro Luis Lazo, Frederich Cepeda, Yuliesky Gourriel, Yoandri Garlobo y compañía, la selección nacional fue destrozando rivales de peso hasta plantarse en la final y obtener el subcampeonato
En las posteriores ediciones (2009-2013-2017) todo fue de mal en peor para las escuadras antillanas ante la presión de jugar el mejor torneo de béisbol en el mundo. En la segunda edición por allá en el lejano 2009, Cuba concluyó como invicta en su grupo eliminatorio jugado en México mostrando una gran ofensiva en hombres claves como Yulieski Gourriel, Frederich Cepeda, Yoenis Céspedes y un gran Yosvani Peraza con ese jonronazo para decidir ante Australia. Todo fue color de rosas hasta que se cruzaron con los asiáticos, quienes no le dejaron libertades de ningún tipo en 18 entradas. En la tercera edición del torneo se conformó unos de los mejores equipos posibles estuvieron a solo cuatro outs de las semifinales cuando cayeron derrotados sensacionalmente, y con remontada incluida 7-6 ante Países Bajos con el grosero error de Yulieski Gourriel en la tercera almohadilla. En el 2017 la historia fue peor, derrotas abultadas ante Israel y Países Bajos detonaron en la temprana eliminación del conjunto antillano en segunda ronda
Pero gracias a Dios todo cambio para la última edición en el 2023, cuando se empezó a cambiar la política y se permitieron jugar algunos Grandes Ligas como Luis Robert Jr, Yoan Moncada, Andy Ibañez y Roenis Elías. Ese equipo antillano sufrió más de la cuenta para acceder a los cuartos de final, al terminar todos en el grupo con el mismo balance de 2-2 para luego enfrentar a la siempre difícil Australia y volver a estar entre los cuatro grandes del Clásico gracias al hit de oro de Yoelkis Guibert en el 5to episodio, a pesar de luego caer aplastados en semifinales por la aplanadora estadounidense. ¿Veremos similar actuación de los antillanos en el próximo Clásico a desarrollarse en marzo?

Cuba in the World Baseball Classic: from runner-up to almost collapse
The World Classic in its five previous versions has been a spectacle of extratospheric magnitude in the world of baseball. It began in 2006 as an innovation and has already become a showcase to represent the colors of its nation and in this writing we will remember the history of our Cuban team less than two months before the sixth edition.
The first edition of the Classic is classified as the best performance of a Cuban team in these contests, reaching the final, which Japan ultimately won the title. The road to the final was not without controversy, because in the first challenge against Panama something more than interesting happened that marked the course of the Antillean ship in the tournament and that was that in the ninth inning with the bases full of Panamanians and the game tied at six runs per side, the then Cuban reliever Yunieski Maya hit a fastball against the then big leaguer Carlos Lee and to the surprise of the Canal fans at the Hiram Bithorn the tall and corpulent first baseman He didn't catch the ball. In subsequent editions (2009-2013-2017) everything went from bad to worse for the Antillean teams under the pressure of playing the best baseball tournament in the world. In the second edition back in 2009, Cuba finished undefeated in its qualifying group played in Mexico, showing a great offensive in key men such as Yulieski Gourriel, Frederich Cepeda, Yoenis Céspedes and a great Yosvani Peraza with that home run to decide against Australia. Everything was rosy until they crossed paths with the Asians, who did not allow him any freedom in 18 innings. In the third edition of the tournament, some of the best possible teams were formed, they were only four outs from the semifinals when they were sensationally defeated, and with a comeback included 7-6 against the Netherlands with the rude error of Yulieski Gourriel on the third base. In 2017 the story was worse, heavy defeats against Israel and the Netherlands led to the early elimination of the Antillean team in the second round.
But thank God everything changed for the last edition in 2023, when the policy began to change and some Major Leaguers such as Luis Robert Jr, Yoan Moncada, Andy Ibañez and Roenis Elías were allowed to play. That Antillean team suffered more than necessary to reach the quarterfinals, finishing all in the group with the same balance of 2-2 and then facing the always difficult Australia and returning to be among the big four of the Classic thanks to Yoelkis Guibert's golden hit in the 5th episode, despite later being crushed in the semifinals by the American steamroller. Will we see a similar performance from the Antilleans in the next Classic to be held in March?
