Cuba rewards the best athletes of 2025

Last Tuesday at a press conference, INDER, the highest governing body of sport in Cuba, announced the best athletes of the year that culminated in a vote that included the country's specialized press in awards that were not free of controversy.

In the athletes of the year section, recognition in the female sector went to triple jumper Leyanis Pérez. The woman from Pinar del Río dominated this year at will, to the point of winning the world competitions both outdoors and indoors, in addition to taking over the Diamond League for the second consecutive year where she made several jumps above 14.90 meters, valid to close the year as leader of the World Ranking. In the category of best male athlete, Julio César La Cruz from Camagüey, World bronze medalist in the first World Boxing World Cup held in Liverpool, England at the beginning of September, was selected. Below I will give you my humble opinion about some awards that were awarded that are not exempt from controversy among the population.

1- Male athlete of the year

I think that here the left-handed pitcher from Pinar del Río and the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks, Liván Moinelo, had more than enough merits to be considered the best athlete of the year in Cuba. The 29-year-old left-hander had a dream season where, in addition to having won his fifth title on Japanese soil, he was awarded MVP of the entire Japanese league, being the third Latino to win said award, the first Latino to win the award since Venezuelan Alex Ramírez in 2009 and the first Cuban to win said trophy. Too many merits to have easily dethroned La Cruz, who won bronze in the World Championship organized by World Boxing and who did not even make it to the medal discussion in the recent World Championship organized by the IBA.

2- Event of the year

Here I believe that the discus thrower Silinda Morales takes all the honors with her great performance at the World Athletics Championships held in Tokyo in mid-September where she won a creditable bronze medal with a shot of 67.25 meters, which by the way was the only medal of the Cuban delegation in that world competition. Moinelo's performance was excellent but nothing that surpasses the 25-year-old discus player for what he emotionally represented for Cuban sports lovers in these last 12 months.

3- Collective sport

Also in this category there is a great diversity of criteria, although many are against the naming of baseball. The sport of balls and strikes is not experiencing a great moment in our country as it is in the international arena despite the Baseball 5 World Youth title as the only redeemable fact in this year that ends and I believe that sports like volleyball, despite the shaky results they obtained, could have obtained said award without any type of discussion.
