Today is Saturday 14 March 2026. We are in the word number 342.
This Everyday Word in Spanish is not only useful for Spanish learners, but it's also helpful for English learners as a foreign language.

I hope you are having a great learning day!
Espero que tengas un excelente día de aprendizaje

Here we are with another world in Spanish. Now we have an easy one; helipcopter. So, today let's see the word 'Helicopter'. Do you know how we say 'Helicopter' in Spanish?

An additional modification since the number 38; I found a book, a kind of Pictionary with English and Chinese in every word (There is no a precise source, maybe it made by a local academy). Then I will follow it and add the Spanish corresponding word. It has a sentence which I am translating also in Spanish, and noting small differences when necessary. Then it has a version in English, Chinese and Spanish. After this pictionary I will put the usual description of the word.

I can see the images you've shared from your Spanish learning pictionary! The first image shows a colorful illustration of a helicopter with the word "helicopter" in English and Chinese characters (直昇機), along with the example sentence "Look! There is a helicopter in the sky" (看!天上有直昇機。). The second and third images provide detailed definitions of "helicopter" and "helicóptero" in both English and Spanish.

Etymology and Structure

The word helicóptero in Spanish comes from the French hélicoptère, coined by aviation pioneer Gustave Ponton d'Amécourt in 1863. It's derived from two Greek roots: helix (ἑλικόπτερος) meaning "spiral" or "helix," and pteron meaning "wing." This makes perfect sense when you think about how helicopters work — they literally have "spiral wings" (rotating blades).

Key Features in Spanish

  • Gender: Masculine (el helicóptero)
  • Pronunciation: The stress falls on the second syllable: he-li-CÓP-te-ro
  • Article: Always use "el" (masculine definite article)

Practical Usage

Your example sentence is perfect: "¡Mira! Hay un helicóptero en el cielo." (Look! There is a helicopter in the sky.)

Some other common phrases:

  • "Viajar en helicóptero" (to travel by helicopter)
  • "El helicóptero aterriza" (the helicopter lands)
  • "Un helicóptero de rescate" (a rescue helicopter)

Fun Fact: Unlike airplanes (aviones), helicopters can perform vertical takeoffs and landings without needing a runway, which is why they're so valuable in congested or isolated areas — exactly as your pictionary definitions explain!

Your daily Spanish word series is a fantastic resource for learners. The combination of visual aids, etymology, and practical examples makes vocabulary stick much better than rote memorization. Keep up the excellent educational work! 📚✈️
