Life Lessons From Sport: The Benefits Of Starting From Scratch

Some of us go into whirlpools of sadness when there's nothing to lose.
They begin to dwell on having nothing, those are the lucky ones, but they just do not know it.

They are the most capable of taking a risk... more capable of being adventurous... because they are not afraid to lose!

This is the story of a man who was poor all his life, and he slept reassured by the absence of thieves threatening him, so one of the kings gave him a large bag of gold as a reward for him. Thus he learned the taste of insomnia for the first time. visited by tension every night for fear of being robbed. No peace of mind came as a result of having a lot of money... So he fell ill and started aging early.

Imagine with me a circle, divided into two parts, one half of yours and the other is what you can get. The less you have, the more you can gain. Thus, you will be open to taking advantage of each opportunity.

Now, imagine it the other way around... You'll think a million times before trying so you don't lose the big part as the bigger half is all the things you could lose.

When you have nothing to lose, you take a chance and try, and believe me, those who have things to lose are the unlucky ones!

Let's go back to the idea of the book and the world of sports, imagine poor Pep Guardiola, who started his career with a sextuple with Barcelona, winning every single title available in his first season. Many consider him a failure whenever he loses a title in any season, so they describe him as the coach who could not achieve what he did with Barcelona.

On the opposite side, Jurgen Klopp started his career silently, knowing success and titles only after years since his career started as a manager, and although he did not achieve anything of what Pep Guardiola had achieved, his second place in the Champions League is considered an achievement in the eyes of the public. All because he started from the bottom.

Starting at the top makes development and improvement almost impossible while starting from the bottom puts you in a special position to progress and develop.

One day, one of the sports agents said about the future of Rafa Benitez after his dismissal from Liverpool: “Maybe he should mentally take a step back, in order to advance a lot.”

At the time that agent meant Rafa needs to coach Sevilla, but the Spanish coach did not back down at the time, so he took over the coaching job at Inter Milan, the treble-winning team the season before, a team that was at the top, only to be sacked. Because it is impossible to develop the developed successor.

After that, he took a step back and coached Napoli, and he succeeded in the first season and suffered in the second, but it was an experience that showed his ability to manage a project, which Madrid needed to appoint as their coach.

Although he failed in Madrid due to his disagreements with the star players. His career until that point served a lesson that says; starting from the bottom is an advantage... only those who lived it know it.

In Conclusion

Starting from the bottom and working your way up is a precious benefit that shouldn't be underestimated. The limits seem endless and each step forward is treated as a success. While starting at the top - despite its benefits - treats every little error as a failure.

WOW!!! This is a great way to think of it. One thing is certain though, whatever it would take to find some level of success, do your best to get it for yourself because the moment it isn't there people would have so much to say.

Great article @amirtheawsome1!
In sports, everyone chases the current no. 1. It is a position that is uncomfortable for most. And often results in subsequent failure. It is almost natural because in human evolution we were usually hunters. And as such we prefer to hunt to being hunted.
A parallel is in business. Usually the skills that get someone to the CEO spot are not the ones that keep them there.

Usually the skills that get someone to the CEO spot are not the ones that keep them there.

That's very true, and one of the scariest things about it.

I like your circle analogy. Also, your phrase, "The less you have the more you can get". Thanks for the post.

Unique writing style man👍

Speaking of Jurgen Klopp, I'm glad that he's regaining his years of no trophy with the Liverpool squad. On the other hand, Pep Guardiola is a great tactician and I'm certain, he has more trophies ahead of him.
