Quick Takeaways From Saturday's Games

Mulan

After an eventful Saturday, filled with matches and exciting moments. While it is impossible to analyze a game so quickly after it finishes, there are some takeaways that I believe are safe to make.

Life is easier with Lewandowski

Barcelona had probably their worst to date this season against Mallorca and still walked away as winners thanks to Lewandowski who scored the only goal of the game giving the win to Barcelona despite a relatively poor performance that required some Ter Stegen magic who broke his own record of keeping a clean sheet to keep them in the game.

I went back to check Barcelona's other matches this season to confirm this information, and it was true: Lewandowski's goals for Barcelona this season have been mainly either the tie breaking goals or the goals that double the lead. This makes Lewandowski's important not only in terms of quantity for Barcelona, but also quality and importance.

Lewandowski is the striker you want to have in a league and against lower and midtable teams as he always delivers there. You could criticize how he doesn't show up in big games all you want, and I have, but 3 points are 3 points whether against Elche or Real Madrid and points are all that matters in title races.

Liverpool's problem is tactical

If the match against Brighton proved something then it is that Liverpool's problem is mainly tactical. Obviously, someone could point out to individuals making mistakes, looking at you Trent and Van Dijk, but that's only the result of bad streaks as it magnifies mistakes all over the pitch.

Individuals get worse when the play system itself gets worse as part of the system is individuals covering each other, but when the system itself has problems, the cracks start to show. That doesn't mean that Trent shouldn't improve defensively, but it is something that's become as big of a problem as it is now due to the system not covering his mistakes more.

The system is also bad offensively as Salah is getting further from the goal, which is not where you want him to be, but, Liverpool have become a team that is more containable as of late.

Still, Liverpool seem to still have the fighting spirit to give the fans hope. However, Klopp might need to change or add someone in his coaching staff as new ideas are required. Playing solely on fighting spirit could only get you so far.

Arsenal's mentality has improved

A win in a North London derby is always important and impressive, but the biggest takeaway here is the way the win was achieved. Arsenal managed to break down Spurs' defense, but Spurs equalizer is something we saw break Arsenal before many times, at least for a few moments which are usually enough to cost Arsenal the game overall.

Such a spirit also existed against Manchester United but here Arsenal were also more fortunate as let's admit it, Spurs did waste some good chances. But, 22 shots with 9 on target against 7 shots with 3 target do show some superiority.

Each win for Arsenal is a step closer to the title that the players seem to believe they could win. Obviously, winning the league from a team like Manchester City with Haaland up front is closer to impossible than to possible. But, the idea is earning enough points to overall say that Arsenal have taken steps forward since last season.

Conte's counter-attack style isn't enough anymore

I believe Conte is slowly starting to realize that his style of only attacking in quick counter-attacking fashion and only applying pressure for limited periods of the game isn't enough anymore. This style just isn't going to work all the time. Three shots on target would have looked impressive against Arsenal's nine if Spurs scored more and Arsenal didn't, but without those stats, you could unarguably assume bad performance.

Tottenham showed in many times that their team isn't able to move the ball around or keep possession for some time. In the current state of the Premier League, competing for the top spots require having players able to have possession of the ball and control over the game.

This is the end for Lopetegui

Sevilla's manager, José Antonio Lopetegui, seems to be closer to the exit door than ever before following the loss to Atletico Madrid. While the coach does have his reasons as he lost many star players, the team isn't connecting could mean he has lost his ability to influence the players.

Sevilla's decision makers do share a big portion of the blame as their decisions to sell so many players and replace with players with a 50-50 chance at making an impression, including an odd decision to sell both starting center-backs but it remains easier to sack the manager instead of the board or spending tens of millions to sign other players.

The Sevilla fans seem to also want the Spainard manager out making his decision to taking Real Madrid's offer in the first place and leaving the Spanish national team the worst decision he made.

I am very impressed with Arsenal so far! I dont think they will be able to hold this pace until the end. I think they will break down after the World Cup but it is still refreshing to see an Arsenal that is able to compete once again :D

wow it's a good point you made. There's no precedent as far as I am aware where there is a World Cup during the season. Teams with depth will come out best I think. Perhaps even teams with good players that aren't playing in the World Cup such as Italian players

and @ga38jem

10 out of City's XI seem to be called up plus like 5 more from the bench. Liverpool, Chelsea, even Spurs and United seem likely to have more players in the World Cup than Arsenal and they also seem even less likely to have starters.

I do acknowledge the possibility but it would take an incredible amount of bad for Arsenal to be the most affected. Although, we are know to have bad luck.

I'm very happy with the performance of this present Arsenal side, they seem to be very focused, they might play in the Champions League next season going at this rate.

Yeah, let's not get carried by all this media talk about winning the title. The goal has always been to get the Champions League spot.
