What I Need to See From Arsenal This Season

Mulan

Arsenal have won their fifth game out of five and they are on their way to winning the English Premier League title! Right? Well.

Obviously not

Even if we take the league title out of the equation as most of us already believe it's going to Manchester City, it's still hard believing that Arsenal would come second, isn't it? We already know that qualifying for the Champions League is definitely the bare minimum for Arsenal, but what else could quantify success?

Here is where we come to talk about what I want to see from Arsenal this season.

Top 4 Spot Doesn't Mean You're A Top 4 Team

Just like Leicester City winning the league didn't make them title contenders next season or West Ham making it to the semi-final didn't make them favorites or even Eintracht Frankfurt winning it didn't make them favorites over Tottenham in the group stage despite Tottenham being a team that got knocked out from the Conference League last season. Just like all of those, it's just the position on the table.

What Arsenal need to do is show that they belong as part of the top 4 conversations or belong in the same paragraph as Manchester City and Liverpool rather than being part of "the rest", it's not about their position on the table by the end of the season.

Determining Where Arsenal Are

This is what needs to be done this season. Arsenal need to complete all the elements and answer the questions that would determine how good they are.

What this means is simply Arsenal needs to perform well against Manchester City, Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United. It also means building the team's spine. All of that comes from great performances against top teams or just simply a winning streak or even remaining top of the league for a month or two more. It could also mean a player peaking in a performance like never before.

Arteta and Arsenal need to use everything at their disposal to extend their current run of form for as long as possible. They need to scratch and claw until their nails bleed, defend or attack like their lives depend on it, just anything that would say this is the end product of Arsenal.

Arsenal Need to Build Up Memories

I am enjoying watching Arsenal these days but I always have my hand on my heart thinking that we could concede a goal any minute or have one of those famous shutdown moments we had last season or even injuries out of nowhere.

I saw a glimpse of that in the last two matches. Arsenal came from behind against Fulham and avoided a draw against Aston Villa, they deserved both wins really. Arsenal didn't break like before and absorbed the shock rather quickly and reacted accordingly. Now for this streak to be a great memory, Arsenal needs to defeat Manchester United.

Having that moment to come back to while in a difficult place is what helps teams overcome tough obstacles. There isn't a clearer example than Real Madrid's run last year.

Arsenal's Memories Are Bad

Do you remember facing Manchester City in the second leg last season where we started well and even scored? We lost. Do you remember our excellent few minutes of domination against Liverpool? We lost. Do you remember doing amazing in the Europa League before losing to Atletico Madrid? One frustration after another, every time we get close to achieving something, we fail.

Whether top matches that would have given us boosts or tournaments, Arsenal always collapsed in the last few breaths. That's what needs to change.

Streaks don't go on forever obviously. But, maybe having 21 points from seven games would be called a great achievement and a good memory to have. After that, something could go wrong and then pick up again.

Arsenal need to be a team on the rise to reflect the hard work of the few years whether in the transfer market or Arteta's tactical work.

In Conclusion

Arsenal have what it takes, yes, there are always players you could add to strengthen your team but the current squad looks able to pull off those great performances needed to have a great, successful season.

Well I hope your mob do manage to beat mufc on Sunday. Last season it was Arsenal who were bottom after a couple of games and I admire Arteta for digging them out of that hole. This season it was mufc, but now they've turned it around 😒 - couldn't believe Liverpool lost to them... but as you say, that's the kind of result Arsenal will need to stay #1 this season. Now they have Jesus on their side I guess they can do it.

Is Arsenal your team?

Can't be worse than Spurs, surely?

Had a few years below them in past years, seem to be picking up.
