El Real Madrid es el máximo ganador de la UEFA Champions League con 13 copas. Ganó las 5 primeras Copas de Europa de manera consecutiva y luego de que el torneo pasó a llamarse UEFA Champions League han conseguido levantar la copa en 7 ocasiones, tres de ellas de manera consecutiva, desde el 2016 al 2018, hazaña jamás conseguida por equipo alguno. En total han participado en 16 finales europeas y han perdido un total de tres, la última en 1981 frente al Liverpool, su rival de turno para la venidera final de París. El actual nombre de la competición tuvo su origen en la temporada 1992-1993. El equipo blanco estuvo un periodo de 32 años sin levantar el título del torneo más prestigioso a nivel de clubes del planeta. Fue en la temporada 1996-1997 cuando se rompió la sequía al derrotar a la poderosa Juventus de Turín con pizarra de un gol por cero. La Juve salía como amplia favorita, con un equipo que contaba con estrellas como Del Piero, Zidane, Inzaghi, Davis, Deschamps y Paolo Montero ante un Madrid con buenas figuras, pero que venía de una pésima temporada. El Real contaba con jugadores de la talla de Raúl, Fernando Hierro, Roberto Carlos, Redondo, Morientes y Seedorf. EL partido se decidió con un polémico gol de Mijatovic. Dos años después el rival de la final fue el Valencia de Héctor Cuper, los cuales fueron avasallados por los blancos con un contundente 3 a 0. Los goles fueron a la cuenta de Morientes, Mcmanaman y Raúl. Como previamente sucedió, tuvieron que pasar dos años para otra final de los Merengues. Esta vez fue frente al Bayer Leverkusen. Esta final quedó marcada para la historia por el golazo decisivo de Zidane que consiguió empalmar una perfecta media volea a pase de Roberto Carlos. El marcador lo abrió Raúl para los madridistas, mientras que Lucio empató por los alemanes. Esta era la novena Champions para el Real Madrid, pues luego de estos gloriosos años vino una larga sequía de títulos continentales.

El año 2014 fue el año que lo cambió todo. Después de 12 años de noches dolorosas, el Real Madrid pudo alzar por fin la tan anhelada décima Champions League. La final fue un derbi de la ciudad de Madrid, debido a que el Atlético de Madrid fue el otro finalista. En una final que quedará para siempre en el corazón de los madridistas, Godín abrió la lata por el Atlético tras un grosero error de Casillas, luego de una falta directa.El segundo acto transcurrió como era de esperar, con Atleti metido en su campo, un córner botado por Modric sirvió para que Sergio Ramos pusiera la épica en la final, con un gol de cabeza en el minuto 93, cuando ya todo estaba perdido para los blancos. Ya en la prórroga el Madrid mostró un mejor estado físico y logró marcar hasta tres goles para llevarse la copa. Los goles fueron marcados por Bale, Marcelo y Cristiano. Como sucedió anteriormente, pasaron dos años y los merengues volvieron a levantar el trofeo, este fue el inicio de una seguidilla de tres títulos consecutivos, nuevamente contra el Cholo Simeone y su Atlético. Esta vez el duelo se decidió desde los 11 metros, luego de que el partido quedara igualado a uno, con goles de Sergio Ramos para el Madrid y Carrasco para el Atlético. La última Champions lograda por los vikingos fue ante el Liverpool, en una final recordada por los errores de Karius y la lesión de Salah a manos de Sergio Ramos. El primer tiempo fue un cero a cero y todas las emociones quedaron para la segunda mitad. Benzema marcó su primer gol en una final de Champions, con total astucia, se interpuso en un saque de manos del portero del conjunto red. Mane puso las tablas en el marcador con un disparo ajustado al palo que batió a Keylor. Pero el héroe definitivo de la final fue Gareth Bale que entró al partido desde el banco y fue factor decisivo con dos goles.
