A propósito del buen momento que vive el Sevilla FC, veamos a manera de resumen la trayectoria deportiva de su entrenador Julen Lopetegui, tanto como jugador profesional, así como su carrera en los banquillos.

Julen desarrolló toda su carrera como portero. Sus primeros pasos allá por los años 80 los dio en el segundo equipo de la Real Sociedad, fueron las temporadas 83-84 y la 84-85. Con 20 años fichó por el Real Madrid, donde estuvo por un periodo de 6 temporadas incluyendo una cesión a Las Palmas. En el club blanco no tuvo la regularidad esperada y sus minutos de juego fueron pocos, debido a la gran competencia que existía en la plantilla.
Para la temporada 1991-1992 firmó por el modesto Logroñes, donde fue titular en las tres temporadas que disputó. Esto le sirvió para debutar con la selección española y asistir al mundial de Estados Unidos 1994 con La Roja. Luego de asentarse en primera división el FC Barcelona lo contrató por tres temporadas. En los tres años que pasó en el conjunto azulgrana no pudo consagrarse como titular en ninguna de las temporadas, por lo que forzó su salida en busca de minutos.
Fue el Rayo Vallecano el último destino como jugador del portero de origen vasco. Permaneció en el club de Vallecas desde 1998 hasta el 2002, año de su retiro, ya con 35 años. Tampoco fue titular indiscutible en el conjunto madrileño, pero jugó más partidos que en sus clubes anteriores. En las tres temporadas que jugó en primera, luego de lograr el ascenso desde segunda divisió, disputó un total de 36 encuentros.
Julen developed his entire career as a goalkeeper. He took his first steps in the 80's with Real Sociedad's second team in the 83-84 and 84-85 seasons. At the age of 20 he signed for Real Madrid, where he spent 6 seasons, including a loan spell at Las Palmas. In the white club he did not have the expected regularity and his minutes of play were few, due to the great competition that existed in the squad.
For the 1991-1992 season he signed for the modest Logroñes, where he was a starter in the three seasons he played. This allowed him to make his debut with the Spanish national team and attend the 1994 World Cup in the United States with La Roja. After settling in the first division, FC Barcelona signed him for three seasons. In the three years he spent in the azulgrana team he could not become a starter in any of the seasons, so he forced his departure in search of minutes.
Rayo Vallecano was the Basque-born goalkeeper's last destination as a player. He remained with the Vallecas club from 1998 until 2002, the year of his retirement, at the age of 35. He was not an undisputed starter in the Madrid team, but he played more games than in his previous clubs. In the three seasons he played in the first division, after achieving promotion from the second division, he played a total of 36 matches.

Inicios como entrenador || Beginnings as a coach
Apenas un año después de su retiro inicio su carrera como entrenador. Su primer equipo fue justamente el Rayo Vallecano que había descendido a segunda división. Duró poco en el cargo debido a que fue despedido poco después de comenzar la temporada. Aquella temporada el Rayo termino descendiendo a Segunda B, tercera división del futbol español.
En 2006 entró al Real Madrid para hacer un trabajo de oficina. Fue designado como el jefe de Ojeadores Internacionales. Luego de dos años al frente del departamento volvió a entrenar, esta vez al frente del Real Madrid Castilla. En la única temporada que dirigió al segundo equipo del Real Madrid dirigió un total de 38 partidos con 18 victorias, el 55.26% de los partidos, 9 empates y 11 derrotas con una diferencia de goles de +15, producto a 60 goles a favor y 45 en contra.
Desde su salida del Real Madrid paso varios años trabajando para las categorías inferiores de la selección española. En total estuvo cuatro años, de 2010 a 2014 donde dirigió a la selección sub-19, a las sub-20 y a la sub-21.
Just one year after his retirement, he began his career as a coach. His first team was precisely Rayo Vallecano, which had been relegated to the second division. Since his departure from Real Madrid, he spent several years working for the lower categories of the Spanish national team. In total he spent four years, from 2010 to 2014 where he coached the U-19, U-20 and U-21 national teams.

Su gran salto como entrenador lo dio al tomar las riendas del Oporto de la primera división portuguesa. Permaneció dos años al mando del equipo, fue destituido en 2016 luego de caer en fase de grupo de la Champions League. En total con el club portugués dirigió 90 partidos con 59 victorias, 21 empates y solo diez derrotas. Su equipo anotó en ese periodo 183 goles con 62 recibidos y una diferencia de +121. Ya en Oporto se empezaron a ver las cualidades de Julen como entrenador, un juego de posesión, pero a la vez directo, con la portería rival como principal objetivo. Estos resultados y estilo de juego le valieron para ser llamado por la selección española en julio de 2016.
Con la Roja tuvo excelentes números y clasificó a España al mundial, dominando con relativa facilidad su grupo eliminatorio en el cual se encontraba la siempre peligrosa Italia, que había eliminado a España en la Eurocopa de 2016 disputada en Francia. Quizás el mejor momento futbolístico de la España de Julen fue el tres a cero recetado a Italia en el Bernabéu con una soberbia actuación de su equipo y con destaque principal para Isco Alarcón, autor de un golazo de falta directa.
A pocos días del comienzo de Rusia 2018 el sueño mundialista de Lopetegui terminó al conocerse que había fichado por el Real Madrid y que dejaría la selección después de la cita mundialista. Al enterarse de esto el presidente de la Federación Española lo ceso del cargo y puso a Fernando Hierro al frente del equipo. El mundial de España fue pésimo en todos los sentidos, de ser una de las favoritas al título termino siendo la mayor decepción. En general sus números con la selección fueron: 20 partidos jugados con 14 victorias y seis empates, de estos empates 5 fueron en partidos amistosos.

He remained in charge of the team for two years and was dismissed in 2016 after losing in the group stage of the Champions League. In total with the Portuguese club he managed 90 matches with 59 wins, 21 draws and only ten defeats. His team scored in that period 183 goals with 62 conceded and a goal difference of +121. Already in Porto Julen's qualities as a coach began to be seen, a possession game, but at the same time direct, with the opponent's goal as the main objective. These results and style of play earned him a call-up to the Spanish national team in July 2016.
With La Roja he had excellent numbers and qualified Spain to the World Cup, dominating with relative ease his qualifying group, which included the always dangerous Italy, who had eliminated Spain at Euro 2016 in France. Perhaps the best footballing moment of Julen's Spain was the three-nil win over Italy at the Bernabeu with a superb performance of his team and with Isco Alarcon, author of a great goal from a direct free kick.
A few days before the start of Russia 2018, Lopetegui's World Cup dream came to an end when it was revealed that he had signed for Real Madrid and would leave the national team after the World Cup. Upon learning of this, the president of the Spanish Federation dismissed him and put Fernando Hierro in charge of the team. Spain's World Cup was lousy in every way, from being one of the favorites to win the title, it ended up being the biggest disappointment. In general his numbers with the national team were: 20 games played with 14 wins and six draws, 5 of these draws were in friendly matches.
Su estancia en el Real Madrid fue corta, fue destituido luego de disputar solo 18 partidos, con 9 victorias, 2 empates y 7 derrotas. Le pasó factura la marcha de Cristiano Ronaldo en ese verano y el no encontrar un sustituto natural para recambio del portugués, así como una seguidilla de malos resultados que terminó con la paciencia de Florentino Pérez.
La reivindicación la encontró en el Sevilla FC. Su primer año como entrenador en el equipo hispalense lo saldó con el título de la Europa League, venciendo, con remontada incluida, al Inter de Antonio Conte. Ha finalizado dos veces en la cuarta posición de La Liga Santander. Este año marchan segundos a 6 puntos del Real Madrid mostrando un excelente juego que tiene encantado a los aficionados sevillistas. En tres años en el Sánchez-Pizjuan acumula 158 partidos, 92 victorias, 37 empates y 29 derrotas, 241 goles a favor, 139 en contra con una diferencia de +102.
Sus equipos se caracterizan por jugar un fútbol de posesión, con pases cortos y juego por bandas. En toda su carrera ha dirigido 380 partidos con 232 victorias que representan el 68% de todos los partidos disputados, 80 empates y 68 derrotas. Sus conjuntos han anotado 718 goles y han recibido 350 con una diferencia de +368.

He has twice finished fourth in La Liga Santander. This year they are second, 6 points behind Real Madrid, showing an excellent game that has delighted the Sevillian fans. No sabía que había sido portero Lopetegui, lo conozco ya como entrenador y para mí ese despido del Madrid no fue merecido. Yo confío en que si hubiera tenido más tiempo de trabajo fuera enderezado la máquina, pero no lo aguantaron y me parece un gran entrenador.
Lo que más me gusta es esa manera de como pone a jugar a los equipos, mucha posesión, buen trato de pelota y bueno se nota cuando el Sevilla está en cancha.
En el Madrid tanto la prensa como los aficionados meten mucha presión y a la mínima racha de resultados malos, a la calle. Para mi su principal error fue lo que sucedio en la selección ambos bandos se manejaron mal, Saludos.
