Tuvieron que pasar más 30 años para que un cubano ganara el premio al jugador más valioso en la MLB. El último en hacerlo fue en controversial José Canseco en el año 1988. Fue en el año 2020 cuando otro oriundo de la isla se hiciera con el trofeo MVP. No fue otro que José “Pito” Abreu jugador de los Chicago White Sox.
Abreu tuvo un año fenomenal en la temporada 2020 recortada por la pandemia. En 60 juegos disparó 76 hits en 240 comparecencias al plato para un promedio de bateo de .317, su más alto en MLB, empatado con el que obtuvo en su primer año en la gran carpa. Sacó 19 pelotas del parque e impulsó 60 carreras, acumuló 15 dobles y 43 carreras anotadas. Con esos números fue segundo en homeruns de la Liga Americana, primero en hits, tercero en carreras anotadas, cuarto en promedio, primero en slugging con .617, primero en total de bases con 148 y primero en carreras impulsadas. Sin dudas, números de ensueño que le sirvieron para llevarse el galardón y su tercer Bate de Plata. ¿Pero, fue la única temporada buena de Pito? Veamos.
Llegó a las Grandes Ligas en la temporada 2014 luego de salir de Cuba de manera ilegal. En las Series Nacionales dejó excelentes números desde que debutara en el año 2003. En diez años sumó 918 indiscutibles, anotó en 557 oportunidades, su promedio fue de .342, desapareció 184 pelotas, impulsó a 593 compañeros para el plato, su por ciento en base fue de .457 con 167 dobles y 16 triples.
It took more than 30 years for a Cuban to win the most valuable player award in the MLB. The last one to do so was the controversial José Canseco in 1988. It was in 2020 when another native of the island won the MVP trophy. It was none other than José "Pito" Abreu, player of the Chicago White Sox.
Abreu had a phenomenal year in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. In 60 games he fired 76 hits in 240 plate appearances for a .317 batting average, his highest in MLB, tied with his first year in the big top. He knocked 19 balls out of the park and drove in 60 runs, accumulated 15 doubles and 43 runs scored. With those numbers he was second in homers in the American League, first in hits, third in runs scored, fourth in average, first in slugging with .617, first in total bases with 148 and first in runs batted in. Undoubtedly, dream numbers that helped him win the award and his third Silver Slugger. But, was it Pito's only good season? Let's see.
He came to the Major Leagues in the 2014 season after leaving Cuba illegally. In the National Series he left excellent numbers since his debut in 2003. In ten years he totaled 918 hits, scored in 557 opportunities, his average was .342, disappeared 184 balls, drove 593 teammates to the plate, his on-base percentage was .457 with 167 doubles and 16 triples.

Volvamos a la MLB. Su primera temporada fue extraordinaria, tal es el caso que ganó el Rookie off the Year en la Liga Americana, premio que se le da al mejor novato de una temporada. Participó en 145 desafíos, bateando 176 hits producto a 36 home runs, 35 dobles y 2 triples. Pisó el plato en 80 ocasiones, recibió 51 bases por bolas y tuvo un promedio de bateo de .317. A parte del Novato del Año ganó también el Jugador de la Semana en una ocasión, dos veces fue Jugador del Mes y en tres ocasiones Novato del mes, estuvo en el Juego de Estrellas y los equipos ideales de novato y de la liga, además de ganar su primer Bate de Plata. Todos estos galardones pertenecientes a la Liga Americana.
Siempre se dice que la segunda temporada de un pelotero en grandes ligas es la más difícil de su carrera, para el jugador del White Sox no fue el caso. Volvió a superar por segundo año consecutivo la cifra de 30 home runs y 100 impulsadas con 30 y 101 respectivamente. Promedio de .290 producto de 178 hits que incluyeron 34 dobles y 2 triples, anotó 88 carreras, su OBP fue de .347 y su slugging de .502. Todos estos números fueron muy similares a la temporada anterior lo que demuestra que su rendimiento se mantuvo estable. El año 2015 fue nombrado en par de ocasiones Jugador de la Semana.
Las dos campañas posteriores, la 2016 y 2017 fueron similares a sus predecesoras. En ambas oportunidades sobrepasó nuevamente la marca de 100 impulsadas y 25 homeruns, con 101 y 30 en 2016 y 25 y 100 en 2017. Tuvo promedio de bateo de .293 y .304 respectivamente, 183 y 189 indiscutibles en ambas zafras, esta última su mayor cifra hasta ahora. Conectó 32 y 43 dobles, 1 y 6 triples, con OBP de .353 y .354 respectivamente. En estos dos años solo pudo alcanzar una distinción por parte de la MLB que fue el premio al Jugador de la Semana, el 28 de mayo de 2017.

All these awards belong to the American League.
It is always said that a player's second season in the major leagues is the most difficult of his career, and this was not the case for the White Sox player. For the second consecutive year, he surpassed the 30 home runs and 100 RBIs mark with 30 and 101 respectively. He averaged .290 on 178 hits including 34 doubles and 2 triples, scored 88 runs, his OBP was .347 and his slugging was .502. All of these numbers were very similar to the previous season which shows that his performance remained steady. In 2015 he was named Player of the Week on a couple of occasions.
The two subsequent campaigns, 2016 and 2017 were similar to their predecessors. On both occasions he again surpassed the 100 RBIs and 25 homers mark, with 101 and 30 in 2016 and 25 and 100 in 2017. He had batting averages of .293 and .304 respectively, 183 and 189 hits in both seasons, the latter his highest figure so far. He hit 32 and 43 doubles, 1 and 6 triples, with OBP of .353 and .354 respectively. In these two years he could only reach one distinction by the MLB, which was the Player of the Week award, on May 28, 2017.

Sus números bajaron un poco debido a una lesión y no pudo conseguir por quinta ocasión de manera consecutiva los 25 cuadrangulares y 100 remolques. En 128 juegos, bateó para .265 con 132 hits, 22 batazos de vuelta completa, 78 traídos para el plato, 68 carreras anotadas, 36 doble y un triple. Sus promedio de OBP y Slugging fueron .325 y .473. Cuando todos pensaban en el declive de su carrera, el de Mal Tiempo tuvo otra extraordinaria temporada. Solo dejó de participar en tres partidos de su equipo, por lo que disputó un total de 159. Pego 180 indiscutibles, anotó en 85 ocasiones, conectó 33 bambinazos e impulso 123 carreras, su mejor marca de por vida. Además tuvo 38 dobles, un triple y un promedio de bateo de .284, de OBP .330 y de Slugging de .617. Participó además en el Juego de Estrella por segundo año consecutivo.
Chicago White Sox ganó la División Central de la Liga Americana en 2021 gracias al aporte, entre otros mucho factores, de Jose Abreu. Tuvo su segundo mejor año en cuanto a impulsadas con 117, quedando segundo en la Liga Americana, conectó 30 para la calle, 148 indiscutibles, 30 dobles y 2 triples. Su promedio al bate fue su más bajo desde que juega en el mejor beisbol del mundo con .261, su OBP, en cambio, se mantuvo sobre los 300, con .351 y un Slugging de .481. Fue seleccionado como Jugador de la Semana en una ocasión, asi como Jugador del Mes en el mes de agosto.
Perhaps his poorest season offensively speaking was 2018. His numbers dipped a bit due to injury and he failed to hit 25 homers and 100 RBIs for the fifth consecutive season. In 128 games, he batted for .265 with 132 hits, 22 round-trippers, 78 brought to the plate, 68 runs scored, 36 doubles and a triple. His OBP and slugging average were .325 and .473. He was called to the All-Star Game for the second time and won his second Silver Bat.
When everyone thought his career was on the decline, Mal Tiempo had another extraordinary season. He only missed three games for his team, for which he played a total of 159. He hit 180 hits, scored 85 times, hit 33 home runs and drove in 123 runs, his best mark ever. He also had 38 doubles, a triple and a batting average of .284, an OBP of .330 and a slugging average of .617. He also participated in the All-Star Game for the second consecutive year.
Chicago White Sox won the American League Central Division in 2021 thanks to the contribution, among many other factors, of Jose Abreu. He had his second best year in terms of RBI with 117, second in the American League, 30 hits, 148 hits, 30 doubles and 2 triples. His batting average was his lowest since he has played in the best baseball in the world with .261, his OBP, on the other hand, remained above 300, with .351 and a slugging of .481. He was selected as Player of the Week on one occasion, as well as Player of the Month in the month of August.
