Rednecks that don't like NASCAR: Guess what? It's most of us

There are a lot of perceptions that people have about the redneck community and some of them are true and some of them are not. I am sure that this is true of many different social groups.

I pointed out before that we are idiots in a lot of ways such as the fact that we are one of the only American demographics that clings to tobacco use, especially smoking, even after everyone, even dummy rednecks are very aware that it is terrible for you and is almost certainly going to harm you later in life.

This next one isn't quite as important as smoking but it is still something that is just assumed about the redneck community and I am dead sick of it. Most of my friends and the people I live around are rednecks to some degree and almost none of us even follow NASCAR, let alone love it.

I do, on the other hand, enjoy Bud Light

I would imagine that a lot of the fans of NASCAR are, in fact, rednecks. There are also people from all other walks of life that enjoy it because how in the hell could 100,000 seat stadiums get filled up if only rednecks were interested in the sport?

I have never watched NASCAR and I don't even know the names of more than one or two racers. The only reason why I know these names is because of Bubba Wallace's controversy with the "noose" and because of various other advertising. If you were to give me tickets to a NASCAR event I probably wouldn't consider it worth the gas money to get to the event.

People can enjoy whatever they want to. There are a lot of sports that I don't watch and don't understand people's enthusiasm towards but NASCAR really sticks out to me because I don't get how anyone can find a bunch of cars driving around in a circle to be entertaining. I've heard the noise of the cars is fun and the crashes are even more fun but this doesn't change the fact that these guys drive hundreds of miles in a row in a circle. I don't see what is entertaining about that.

If you like NASCAR, good for you - I'm glad you've found something that makes you happy even though to me I have to think pretty hard to come up with something that is more boring than NASCAR racing; maybe cricket but that has a lot to do with me not understanding how it works at all.

In my redneck community though, very few people even care if an event is on so this idea that just because someone is a country-boy that they are going to really excited about NASCAR is totally wrong. This was never a part of my upbringing or a part of my life at any point in my life. I did once know a guy that liked NASCAR so much that he would listen to it on the radio if he was not near a TV. I was a teenager and I thought this was totally nuts.

I will probably never watch a NASCAR event and if I won tickets to go see them I would probably give them to someone else.

Funny how people get labelled and just expect you to be a fan of whatever it is because you come from a certain region or fit that profile. Good point about the 100 000 seats being filled by someone and they wont all be rednecks.

I'm sure quite a few of them are anyway though. Maybe there is some great redneck reserve somewhere out there that I am not aware of and everyone in that place has all the redneck traits. Another possibility is that my redneck community is quite posh in comparison to the others that exist.

I've tried on a number of occasions to understand why anyone likes this sport. I've been told that you have to go to an event in order to "get it." This might be true because a lot of sports are boring as hell on TV but amazing to be in attendance. I would use baseball as an example.

Same experience here. It was around when Jeff Gordon was getting a big push by Pepsi, whose headquarters is located in a nearby town. They set up giant screens in the park and gave away stuff to get people interested. I stuck around for about an hour but driving around in a circle only stays interesting for so long to me. I suppose there is probably some truth to it being more interesting if you were there in the stadium. It's probably difficult to be surrounded by 80 thousand other people and not get at least a bit excited.
