Unexpected Auction Win!

Unexpected Auction Win!.jpg

I recently found myself an interesting little auction house that sells off the assets of deceased estate and bankruptcies... and every now and then, coins and precious metals pop up on the list of things being sold. Lots of other interesting things as well... I'm always just looking to see if anyone will list a violin, but there is lots of art and furniture... sometimes some really nice stuff as well... pity we don't have space for furniture.

Last week, there were quite a few coins and banknotes... and I put in a few bids for random things... keeping in mind that there was a 22.5% fee added on top of the bid. And most of it got over bid by others... I wasn't really ever keen on going to much higher than the spot price for the precious metal content of the coins.

However, this little silver piece managed to slip through everyone else's radar!

It is only a little baby coin at about 11 grams of fine silver, and it is a weird sports themed one. Weird for me... I tend to be more attracted to the arts or music ones... or ones with nice designs. But silver is silver!

... and this one came with a Certificate of Authenticity (although, who knows if that was really attached to this particular coin. It is a cute little size... I have others of similar size (but they are sterling silver ones with Dutch art masters and their paintings)... most of my fine silver pieces are 1 ounce (31 grams)... and so this is a bit of an oddity in more ways than one in my little collection!

Maybe I should resume prowling my local Auctions website too, I know they have the odd Numismatic offerings but I would have to keep in mind regarding the Hammer premium and the two layers of VAT on top of the Hammer price... maybe that's why I don't follow it anymore, by the time everything is tabulated, it cost far more than what it is valued for.

Oh, TWO layers of VAT????? That seems like too much effort... I never really understood why that is the norm in the US.
