I Did A Thing. A Sports Thing. On Hive.
I haven't been posting much lately. Not because I have gone off Hive but because I was making a Dapp for Hive and this has taken up my time. It was interesting to be on the other side of the wall so to speak and look at how the devs do it. I now have a much larger understanding on the whole Hive ecosystem and know what all the specific Github or Gitlab repos do now. So I know what all these apps , scripts or programs do now such as Workerbee,Wax, Hivemind, Openhive, HAF, HiveSQL etc. There is so much built for Hive it is actually very easy now to transact with it. I started building static websites before the age of AI just for the craic to see how it was done. I remember when the first OpenAI , Chat GPT came out and it was a revelation to me because I could piece together an Auth flow. Back then Chat GPT was not a great coder but it would get you over the line. OpenAI learned quickly that improving coding would bring improvements in every other industry which is why the software developer will be the first job to go in the AI revolution. I quickly switched to Grok from OpenAI which I found even better for coding and then from there I switched to cursor. Cursor used a mix of AI models including their own one. You no longer had to copy and paste code in places with Cursor. Cursor would go to the file and insert itself which was another step forward for me copying and pasting in code. I made a couple of more complicated websites with Cursor. I wrote mostly in python and Django as the back end. But then I found ReactJS and Typescript with Next.JS as a backend and everything was just simpler. At the time as well I switched from CSS to CSS Tailwind and again everything became easier not having to go back and forth all the time switching CSS classes. Tailwind is nearly a returm to having the styling in the html scripts in a way which I like. A back to basics but yet better.
With Cursor flying I heard about Claude and its model Opus 4.5 was a game changer for me. It felt like it would just know what you were thinking and just do it. It would argue with itself and solve problems which was another upgrade. I made Sportsblock from scratch but Claude was a massive help. Opus 4.6 just came out and it is even better again. So good it is actually scary. The paid AI models are a bit creepy they are so good.
I made a betting website as my first real tester but my fellow Irishman @niallon11 and myself had been talking for a while about launching a sports Dapp on Hive so got our heads together and @sportsblock was born. If I concentrated on the website and @niallon11 thought of everything else then it was a match made in heaven. Instead of doing what every community does and fails, we are going about a few things differently. There will be no airdrop for one because we find the first thing the Hive users do is sell off the airdrop.
I have spoken many times about the freeloading going on in Hive and it is ruining the blockchain. Many of the larger stakeholders on Hive have not seen poverty. Not real poverty anyway. I had a friend in Sri Lanka the other day and he said that women in the Paddy fields get paid $2.50 per day once they reach a certain quota of tea leaves. This is a 12 hour day. So if one of these people thought that they could earn $2.50 by writing a post on Hive then they would jump at the chance. When they learn all they need is a Hive banner and a few rubber bracelets to do a conference in the capital Colombo and they can get $5,000 for the effort then they will kill their granny for a chance. We on Hive just have to be more aware that some people have nothing. Nothing! so crypto is their way out.
There will also be a stipulation that every time you post, you will have to give 5% of your reward to Sportsblock to build up the community and establish a proper curation. The native token Medals will be used for curation and only the users that abide by the rules will be giving the tokens. So we think we have a good system anyway. Now I will spend the next while ironing out the various bugs which will be no problem. After every round of code review the website is getting tighter so problems are easier to solve. This is true of AI as well. As well as this the aim will be to create utility for the token and also onboard users that are normalies and not into crypto.
When I first started out on this project we wanted to create a sort of Sports Twitter for normal people so they don't have to sift through the death and destruction in the world. Sport is an escape so I do not want to scroll X and see somebody getting bombed. I want to see Sport. It's ignorant I know but there is a place for a Sports only website. Our next port of call is transferring people from sign ups into Hive users so we will be looking for advice here over the next couple of weeks. We have the signup with email and password option and people can write posts but they will post to a database and not to the Hive blockchain. The goal would be to sign them up to Hive and also which cuts down on our database storage and onboards users to Hive. I know the main Dapps Leo and Splinterlands go about this in entirely different methods so I want to review what would be the best method for us.
The other idea was to build the Dapp like Splinterlands did it and not really mention that it is built on Hive and just use Hive as the mechanics behind the site. Have US dollars as the currency but reallt transact through Hive behind the scenes. You see most people think crypto is a scam and I really don't blame them so what better way to onboard people than to let on that we are not a crypto website. This could still happen by the way with non Hive users and it is something we need to talk about.
Anyway the app is built on www.sportsblock.app. I didn't go down the HAF route quite yet but we will reaccess the larger we grow if it is feasible. The website is in beta while I review the logs, do snag lists on what the users are telling me in the Discord chat here Thanks to @bozz, @talesfrmthecrypt , @fullcoverbetting for letting us know a few bugs in the platform already. The initial feedback is that our shortform content called Sportsbites which was a bit of an afterthought is fast becoming popular for users so we may focus on building this out more in the short term. Who knows? Sportsbites may become the big thing rather than the whole Dapp and Community in Sportsblock. It is interesting how these things mutate. It is like the guy that created Slack. He set up Slack as a tool to build a failed video game not knowing the tool he created called Slack was his real cash cow. It is funny how it works. Except for following Formula 1 and MotoGP, I'm not a sports kind of person, but I know that many are... Because of that, I was surprised to see the SPORTS token and tribe collapsing among the first ones! I suppose it happened because of the bad management and tokenomics... Sports are huge, and there is no reason not to succeed if you build something around it...
Tbh, your learning curve in developing and programming with AI made me think about going into something similar... I'm hesitating for a long time to get into it, but who knows, maybe I'll make that step as you did... 😃
