My Actifit Report Card: May 23 2022
It’s been a while since I’ve been to the big city, and even longer since I’ve been to an airport. I thought it would be easier to log 10,000 steps while waiting for my flight today, but as it turns out, while feeling like I was walking all day, I couldn’t quite get it done.
As always, even in 2022, and after planning to host the Summer Olympics for the world, Japan still has its share of bizarre English translations. Above is one example.
I’m not sure if the fault is that of incompetent native English speakers who make poor translators, or the unwillingness to pay more money for the work of a real person instead of relying on free services like Google translate. I’ve seen a number of translated scripts that have supposedly been checked by native speakers, and they’ve often been full of mistakes and poorly worded sentences.
Anyway, it’s time to fly.

Given how good DeepL is, I'm surprised when I see bad Google Translate translations in the wild. But then again, I suppose scripts are in place and no one wants to take the time to update them.
I haven’t used DeepL yet. I heard people talking about it last year, or possibly even two years ago, and then I forgot about it.
Yeah, there was still quite a lot of strange English in Haneda. Given that it’s such an international hub, I was surprised. I thought that, at least there, they might have figured out how to use this tricky language in a more native way.
I also came across some new terms that I didn’t know were in use, like conactless payments. That one sounded so strange that I felt sure it was some bizarre Japanese-English term, but apparently it isn’t.
