A New PGA?

I have to admit I was a bit surprised to see that the LIV and PGA have announced that they are going to be merging the other day. I know there has a been a lot of contention between the two leagues since the LIV started, but this was really out of left field for me.

I expected there to be a lot more animosity for several more years before one of them collapsed (likely the PGA), or things just virtually imploded.

What I actually find most interesting is the political issues that were raised when the LIV was started have basically be come moot I guess.

If you recall, when the LIV started, there was a huge outcry that the Saudi organization was trying to whitewash the civil rights violations that are so entrenched in the country and the culture. The fact is, many players were willing to over look all of that based on the huge checks that the LIV was paying out.

Given their seed money, you could basically finish last in a tournament and still make more than you would if you finished in the top five of a PGA event. Okay, maybe I am exaggerating a little bit, but you get the idea.

It would seem both organizations were not without their issues as of late. I am still floored that this merger is taking place.

Maybe I am wrong, this could be a boon for the sport of golf as a whole. Perhaps the PGA will be able to reign in some of the atrocities that are happening over there (doubtful). Additionally, maybe the larger purses will bring more talent to the world of golf.

It's hard to say.

What this will do is bring everything back under one umbrella. Once again we should be able to see all of the greats come together and participate in single events. I'd like to see that as a good thing, but there are some who left for LIV that I'd just as soon see gone forever.

I'm talking about you Garcia.

Questions are also being asked if this opens the door for future investment in American sports. The article which I will source below specifically brings up the MLS. Hopefully people aren't hoodwinked by this and still raise questions about the civil rights violations. I guess those sorts of things are all over though, so who are we to point fingers.

I don't know. There is just something about the LIV that never sat right for me. Players were chastised for chasing the money. Other players were chastised for staying and not accepting change. It's a messy mixture all coagulating into whatever this new league will be.

If you want more information, I highly encourage you to read this article. It doesn't answer all the questions, but it does raise some good questions and make some good points.

What do you think? How do you feel about this merger?

I am still in shock, it just shows that as usual money talks...

I feel for Rory and Tiger turning down hundreds of millions to join LIV and pledge allegiance to the PGA who then turn around last night or was it two days ago and give them the shaft!

yeah, I totally agree with you. This is definitely a case of following the money. It is a bit disgraceful.

Yeah it really is. Big news here, they are using their money (ignoring human rights) taking over boxing, football and now they got to golf completely.

That's just crazy. I wonder where it will end (if it ever does).
