A Tough Tournament
It was two years ago now that my wife and I made the short drive over to Northwood University in the middle of Michigan to watch our nieces Tiffin Dragons take on the Timberwolves in a softball double header. If I remember correctly, I think they split that day winning one game and losing one game. This year things were a bit different when the Dragons traveled back to Michigan.
I wasn't at the game this time, but my friend who works at Northwood was and he said that Tiffin "beat the piss" out of Northwood (in both games). Well, hopefully that same thing happens again today when number 1 seed Tiffin faces off against number 4 seed Northwood in the GMAC (Great Midwest Athletic Conference) tournament in Akron, OH.
I've been watching the action from Firestone Field over the past couple of days and it has been pretty exciting. Tiffin had two games yesterday after their first round win against Malone University on Wednesday.
Their first game was a heartbreaking 3 to 1 loss in eight innings against an Ohio Dominican University team they split with earlier in the season.
The good news is, it is a double elimination tournament, so just because they lost that game, doesn't mean they are out. Right after that first game yesterday they had an elimination game against Cedarville who was seeded number 7 in the tournament.
Apparently the frustration they had after not hitting great in the first game was all channeled into the second game. They destroyed the ball quickly going up 7 to 1 and ultimately beating Cedarville 12 to 3 in five innings via the run rule.
That sets them up for the game against Northwood today at 12:30 PM.
Like I said, fingers cross they have a good game today so they can continue in the tournament tomorrow. I talked to my niece a little bit yesterday and she said if they make it to the game on Saturday she is going to drive up to Akron to watch them play.
It also looks like they could have one other game today at 3:30 PM if they win the game against Northwood. Two wins and they will be in the Championship game at 10 AM on Saturday.
