An unexpected weekend

It wasn't the weekend that I expected for my nieces softball team. As I said last week, there was a tournament down in Marion, OH that they were scheduled to play at. While that sort of happened, it didn't really go down the way these things typically do.

Games were set to start on Friday, but unfortunately, a significant amount of rain moved through the area, so instead they moved those Friday games until Saturday. the Saturday games they moved to Sunday, and then they cancelled bracket play for the weekend.

I'm not really sure how you just cancel bracket play, but I guess if you can't play the pool games to determine seeding, what else can you do.

I know that a lot of coaches and players are just happy to get some time on the field. There are many tournaments that guarantee you a certain number of games per weekend. Those are the tournaments that most teams look for. If you are going to pay for a tournament and only play two or three games in the weekend, then it is kind of a waste of money.

The idea is to get these young ladies time on the field to prepare them for the college recruiting, should they decide to play at that next level.

Unfortunately, sometimes Mother Nature has other plans.

The good news is they knew far enough ahead that the games were going to be cancelled, so they didn't have to make the 45 minute drive to Marion for nothing.

Their first game took place on Saturday around noon and they ended up losing 2 to 9. It always seems like these ladies need a little bit of time to shake the cobwebs off from weekend to weekend. I've seen them play this Ohio White team they played on Saturday, and they are a good team. I think the Lasers are better though. Just not on this day.

Their second game took place later in the day and they ended up winning 7 to 3. My oldest niece also subbed for another team from Indiana this past weekend at the same tournament. She did very well and I was happy to see her have some success again on the field. This past year has been a bit of a struggle.

As I said, the games they were supposed to play on Saturday got moved to Sunday, and they started the day with a huge 9 to 0 victory. My younger niece even hit a home run in that game, so that was pretty awesome as well.

Then they played their second game and lost 2 to 9. There were a lot of missteps in that last game that probably could have been avoided. The good news is, with bracket play being cancelled, it really didn't matter.

The team my older niece was subbing for decided to pack up and go home after Saturday. The weather was just too unpredictable and there wasn't much point of them sticking around to maybe play a game in poor conditions.

In case you were wondering, the photo above is from a different weekend. I was busy doing another sports related thing that I will talk about another time. Stick around to see that!

Next weekend, my niece travels to Indianapolis to play in a tournament there.

It was a very nice weekend for sports here.

My Gator's just broke the record for the most runs scored in a game in the College World Series! Hopefully tonight they can finish the job and bring home a championship!

That's great to hear! It was hot and muggy where I live. You basically didn't want to be outside any more than you needed to!

I remember those birds they called mosquitoes up there too! Those things would eat you alive.

Yes, those things are nasty and they are likely going to be even worse now that we are finally getting some rain. The county might have to get out and spray again.

We have lazy sketters here in NC. They got all spring/summer/fall to do there thing.

The skeeters up there in the frozon tundra need to make things happen fast before they get froze out again. Haha...
