Basketball was on this weekend?

I know, I know, it kind of feels like the only sporting event that took place this weekend was football. I even pushed my regular Monday post about basketball until today so I could fully cover it. Well believe it or not, there was quite a bit of basketball this past weekend in between the football games.

I even traveled down state over the weekend to watch my nephews play ball in some rec leagues that they are on. I plan on writing a full post about that tomorrow. Today, it's going to be all about college basketball.

There was only one game in the top 25 on Friday night and it was an 91 to 79 beat down of #11 Wisconsin over Indiana. I didn't watch any of that game because I was busy watching my niece play basketball on Friday night.

It was senior night for her high school team and although she is not a senior, there was still a lot of hype around the game. They had a pretty easy win and they looked quite good. There are still a couple of players that just drive me crazy with some of the things they do. It's just selfish and doesn't show a very high basketball IQ.

I'm honestly surprised that the coach puts up with it. I would imagine it's a fine line between encouraging them to be play makers and expecting them not to do stupid things. As they say in one of my crypto groups on Telegram.

"Sometimes you have to do stupid things to get stupid returns."

I guess so, but it still infuriates me!

On Saturday there were a massive 18 games in the top 25. Things got started in quite exciting fashion with Seton Hall taking #18 Creighton into three overtimes before not being able to finish the upset and losing 97 to 94. #17 Marquette also had a close call against St. John's just edging them out 73 to 72.

Texas had a nice upset over #9 Baylor taking them down 75 to 73. Another upset that took place was #24 Iowa State over #19 TCU. I actually talked about that game last week and I put some money down on it. It was a nice $3 win for me if I remember right.

West Virginia was the surprise of the day upsetting #3 Kansas 91 to 85. #25 Texas Tech also had a nice upset over #20 BYU 85 to 78. It was also nice to see Pittsburgh put up 80 points versus #7 Dukes 76 points for the upset.

I'm actually shocked that Duke ended up ranked that high. I kind of feel like they came out of nowhere.

#1 UConn had a close call against Villanova but ultimately snagged the win 66 to 65.

Sunday gave us three top 25 games. The biggest one for most people being Tulane upsetting #10 Memphis 81 to 79. Memphis seems to be on a bit of a slide lately after having a pretty impressive run so far in the season. I think this is just a speed bump for them and I definitely think they shouldn't be discounted.

The Big East continues to be impressive. I don't know if it's just that they are so evenly matched or if all the teams are just that good.

Sunday I was watching Michigan State take on Maryland at Maryland. I was a bit worried about this game. Michigan State needed a good road win and this definitely fit the bill. Maryland is a good team and MSU tends to struggle against them from time to time.

They came out really hard against the Terapins and had a nice lead over them going into halftime. After halftime it was pretty clear which team made the best adjustments as Maryland started to close the gap with Michigan State and for a bit there had the Spartans on the ropes.

Thankfully MSU squeaked out a win 61 to 59. I was biting my nails. It was pretty nerve wrecking.

Finally, last night there were two games in the top 25. Neither of them were upsets and #7 Kansas seems to have bounce back from their big loss over the weekend.

Michigan State plays again Thursday night in Wisconsin and that is going to be a tough match up. I hope they can continue to roll along though. It's sad to see them not even at the bottom of the top 25.
