College Hoops Weekend Wrap-Up 1/31/2022: Spartans Win!

With all of the excitement happening in the NFL this weekend, it might have been easy to forget that we are still in the heart of college basketball season. There were zero top twentyfive games played on Friday night, but Saturday gave us a whopping 19 games. That means just about every single top 25 team was playing on Saturday. I think there were only about five teams that didn't play on Saturday.

There is only one game that I really watched on Saturday and I will get to that in a little bit. I see that Louisville isn't ranked yet this year and that honestly kind of shocks me a little bit. I guess I haven't really been following them enough to know what they look like this year, but they are usually bouncing around the top 25 from what I remember.

The first upset of the day I am going to cover is unranked TCU over #19 LSU. Well done Horned Frogs! Auburn continues to sit in the #1 spot with a win over Oklahoma. I still am not quite sure how Auburn ended up where they are right now!

Probably one of the biggest upsets of the day was unranked Alabama over #4 Baylor. That should drop them quite a ways down the rankings. It wasn't a close contest either.

@patrickulrich will probably be the first to tell you how awesome it is that #12 Kentucky beat #5 Kansas. That's two top five teams upset on Saturday. Talk about a rough day.

The final upset happened at the hands of unranked Texas over #18 Tennessee. I can't say I am too happy about that one. Hopefully it doesn't knock the Volunteers too far down.

The basektball I did watch this weekend consisted of this:

Friday night my nieces played and the varsity team followed their regular pattern of beating the opponent by twenty points or more. It was a magical thing. Saturday morning we drove down to watch my nephews play basketball. It is one of those skill building leagues where they don't really keep score. They both played well. My youngest nephew has a sweet shot and might have a future in hoops if he can stay focused.

My older nieces played a couple more games and won both of those. We didn't get to watch them since we were watching our nephews.

In between nephew games we went out to lunch and I got to see most of the first half of the Michigan/Michigan State game.

I have to admit, I am a bit of an idiot and I thought this game was on Sunday. When we were at the restaurant and my nephew said they were playing, I realized I must have been mistaken. The first half was a bit rough for the Spartans. I wasn't really sure how the rest of the game was going to play out.

Thankfully, Izzo must have told them what they needed to hear at halftime and they came out guns blazing. They destroyed the Wolverines in the second half and that was a welcome sight!

Being honest though, the best game of the day was probably the contest between #24 Illinois and unranked Northwestern. We caught the tail end of that when we got home from watching my nephews and it was an amazing finish. I kind of wish Northwestern had pulled out the win, but they sure did give Illinois a run for their money losing by only three points. It was the closest contest of the day.

On Sunday there were only three games in the top twenty five. Likely becuase most people were watching the farce that is the NFL (I will write a post about that another day).

Zero upsets on Sunday.

That's all I've got!

This week should be another exciting week of basketball. Check back on Friday to get the recap from me.

No, not at all. The set backs seem to be fewer and farther between. It will be interesting to see how the Olympics play out.
