Evening Things Out

As I said last week, it was a pretty busy weekend as far as sports are concerned. Between college basketball, the winter olympics, the start of softball season, and the superbowl, I am struggling to find where to fit all my content in this week. We are a day early, but I am going to cover college basketball today. Then tomorrow I will talk a little bit about the olympics, and on Thursday I will tackle the college softball season.

Friday anything could happen!

So a week ago we had seven games in the top 25. Number 23 Miami of Ohio had a tough scrape against Buffalo who almost beat them, but Miami of Ohio came away with the 73 to 71 win and remains undefeated on the season. Of course you need to take that with a grain of salt due to strength of schedule, but you know...

That was actually as close as we would come to an upset on Tuesday.

Wednesday on the other hand was a different story.

Number 10 Michigan State took a huge loss to Minnesota 76 to 73. I was watching the beginning of this game and I wasn't too surprised to see they lost. They were looking pretty horrible. It wasn't the Spartans that we have come to know and love over the past season. It hearkened back to their huge loss against Nebraska earlier in conference play.

Then, Oklahoma state took down number 16 BYU 99 to 92 in a stunner at home. Number 20 Clemson had a close win over Stanford 66 to 64, and Portland came away with the upset over number 6 Gonzaga 87 to 80.

Thursday we only had one game in the top 25, and it was a very lopsided match between Penn State and Michigan.

Friday there was only one game as well, but it had a much different outcome than the night before. Number 22 St. John's had a huge upset win over number 3 Connecticut 81 to 72.

Saturday there were eighteen games in the top 25. Oklahoma got the upsets started taking down number 15 Vanderbilt 92 to 91. Meanwhile, number 14 North Carolina had a huge buzzer beating upset win over number 4 Duke 71 to 68. Then number 10 Michigan State took down number 5 Illinois 85 to 82 in overtime to secure their ranking for the week after the big loss in Minnesota.

It's interesting because despite Michigan only falling one spot in the rankings after their loss to Wisconsin earlier in the season, I have a feeling Michigan State would have fallen more than one spot after their loss to Minnesota. The bias is real, but luckily we don't have to find out after their win against Illinois.

Kentucky had a nice upset over number 25 Tennessee, and that was all for the upsets on Saturday.

Sunday only brought us two games in the top 25 and neither of them were upsets.

Monday on the other hand gave us three games and one of them was a huge upset. Number 9 Kansas took down number 1 Arizona 82 to 78 and handed them their first loss of the season. Sadly, this will likely move Michigan up into the number 1 spot in the rankings, but as Wisconsin has shown and Nebraska almost did, we know they aren't perfect. I'd love to see the Wolverines take one more loss before we head into March.
