Fireworks in September?

Man, it was a pretty amazing weekend as far as college football goes. In fact, it was a pretty amazing weekend in general if you ask me. The weather was absolutely fantastic with temps in the mid 70's during the day and low 50's at night. @mrsbozz and I spent a good deal of time out on our patio except when I got called into work to help with a fiber break. Thankfully, that only took up about an hour or two of my day on Sunday and then I was able to get back to relaxing.

If there was a theme from this weekend as far as college football goes, it would probably be "overtime". Actually, now that I think about it, that probably should have been the title of this post instead of "Fireworks in September?". Trust me though, there were fireworks this weekend. They started on Friday night when Virginia had a huge upset at home over Florida State. This year was looking like it could be a turning point for FSU after their horrendous season they had last year. Hopefully for them this is just a speed bump on what might be a road to recovery for them.

That big win over Alabama doesn't quite hit as hard after this loss to Virginia. That loss drops FSU from the number 8 spot down to 18 and puts Virginia in the number 24 spot.

Arizona State also had a nice upset win over TCU 27 to 24 dropping the Horned Frogs out of the top 25 and putting ASU into the number 25 spot. Illinois and USC had a thriller of a game on Saturday with a 34 to 32 win by Illinois. This moves them from the 23 spot to the 22 spot and drops USC from the 21 spot out of the top 25 rankings. That also makes the week 4 Michigan State loss to USC sting just a little bit more.

Number 17 Georgia Tech had a close win over Wake Forest 30 to 29 that went into overtime.

There were actually quite a few upsets on Saturday. One of the biggest ones is probably the 24 to 19 loss that LSU had against Ole Miss. That moved LSU from the number 4 spot down to the number 13 spot and boosted Ole Miss the other way. They basically flip flopped positions in the rankings.

Tennessee had a close win over Mississippi State that went into overtime. The Volunteers came away victorious 41 to 34 and they held onto their number 15 ranking.

Georgia would be another one of the big upsets on Saturday as they tumbled to Alabama 24 to 21. This drops Georgia from the number 5 spot down to number 12 and boosts Alabama from 17 up to 10. I'm glad to see the rankings people didn't get too overzealous and put Bama in the top five.

The final epic game on Saturday was between Penn State and Oregon. Once again, Penn State proved they can't handle these big ticket games and they found themselves losing in double overtime to the Ducks 30 to 24. I watched a good portion of the game and it wasn't that exciting. It was a heavily defensive game which some people might like, but I found it kind of boring.

This loss drops Penn State from number 3 to number 7 and boosts Oregon from number 6 to number 2 in the nation.

Finally, BYU had a close win over Colorado 24 to 21 moving them from the 25th spot last week to the 23rd spot this week.

With Michigan State and Michigan back in action again next weekend I will likely pay a bit more attention to college football than I did this weekend. It's supposed to be kind of hot outside, so I might be indoors watching the games! I still don't think MSU has a great chance of doing too well this season, but the good news is, we are one week closer to basketball season now!
