Football Wrap-up 10/4/2021

There are times I absolutely believe that the NFL or the officials, or some other entity has it out for the Detroit Lions. It has become a theme in my posts about how one bad call (or several) totally screws over the Lions.
Then there are times where there is no other explanation besides the stone cold fact that the Lions suck. Perhaps that is why it is so easy for officals to throw a call the other way. They figure if we don't do it, they will just do it to themselves anyway.
The game yesterday was a perfect example of that. Detroit didn't need a single ounce of help from the men (and women) in white and black to lose because they lost all on their own.
It honestly could have been a much different game if they had been able to convert on even two of the three chances they had in the red zone. Two ended in turnovers (I believe) and one ended in a four and out. Pretty pitiful if you ask me.
It was such a cluster of a game that you almost couldn't help cheering for the Bears to just get it over and done with so we could all be out of our misery.
I don't even know at this point what needs to happen to fix things. It clearly isn't the coach, quarterback, players. All of those positions have changed and guess what... They still suck. Perhaps there is some form of ancient curse in play that only a handful of people know about. I am honestly open to anything at this point in time!
On a slightly brighter note, Michigan State rolled to a victory over Western Kentucky or something like that. I watched the game, but in my honest opinion the score shouldn't have been as close as it was. Nothing against the "Hilltoppers", but MSU's defense didn't appear to be as on point as we have seen them in the past couple of weeks. I really don't think WKU should have been able to put up as many points as they did against the Spartans.
Coverage in the secondary looked really soft and MSU made it easy for the WKU quarterback to further pad his numbers. I think at the beginning of the game he had the most pass yards of anyone in the country on this season.
Don't get me wrong, a win is a win, but it should have been better. @iikrypticsii was at the game and he said he heard many people with the same opinion as me. It shouldn't have been that close.
Heading down the road, U of M apparently won again this weekend. I watched some of the game, but since I don't really care about them, I didn't pay too much attention. What I do care about is the fact that they continue to be ranked higher than MSU in the national poles. Sure they just beat Wisconsin, but who have they beaten before that?
There is absolutely no way their strength of schedule up to this point puts them higher than MSU. Yet there they sit at 14 and the Spartans at 17. It is a joke. One that I hope gets cleared up sooner rather than later.
I'm not saying U of M doens't have a good team. I am just saying, it is pretty clear there are some biases in the college ranking system.
Finally, Stafford was handed his first loss of the season. I don't feel too bad about it. He got it out of the way and now he can move forward. It is a far cry from the 0 and 4 start his old team has on the year.
Everyone has an off day from time to time and in this case I am not even sure it was Stafford that was off yesterday. The final score against Arizona felt kind of lopsided, so it could have been a combination of factors that led to the Rams downfall.
I have little doubt they will rebound next week and give a much better showing.

Bad calls are part and parcel of all sports these days and they have a huge impact on the financials of any team besides where they finish in the various leagues. I don't know what the problem is as the rules should be simple enough for every one to understand and carry out. I wouldn't have a clue about American Football but the certain sports I follow I know the rules having played and studied them. The idea of getting ex players involved needs to be pushed harder as it is a must I believe.
I agree, bad calls can and do happen, but this is some next level stuff with the Lions. They basically just make stuff up on the fly to ensure that the Lions do not win. I think that makes a lot of sense to have former players involved in the officiating of the game.
Definitely was not MSU's best game performance against the Hilltoppers, although I don't mind it all too much as it ended up being a more entertaining game from the back and forth of it. We all love seeing a hard smacking but I would've been somber if my only in-person game was that abysmal.
All of my friends had bets and I was closest of them all with 42-10, fun little competition between us.
That is awesome about the bet. I didn't put any money on the game. I keep meaning to and then the weekend gets here and I totally forget to do it.
I was thinking the other week when I was looking at the scores about how happy you must be this year. Didn't the Spartans let you down a LOT last season?
Yes, they did. I am actually a bit surprised by them this year. They have come out of the gate screaming. I have a feeling once they get into Big 10 play it is going to be a much tougher road. They haven't played all cupcake games this year, so that gives me some hope. Unlike those losers down the road at U of M! :)
