It's gotta be hard being a Kentucky fan...

It would seem the fates of sports have flung us all across the country this weekend. My brother in law is somewhere on the East coast taking in the first couple rounds of NCAA games. Meanwhile, his wife and youngest daughter are down in Tennessee playing some Spring Break softball with her high school varsity team.

Her older sister is getting ready to play a double header of softball games tomorrow afternoon, and I think @mrsbozz and I are going to try and drive down to Ohio for the day tomorrow to catch those games. It will amount to a long day of travel for us, but I was texting with my niece last night and she is beyond excited that we are coming to see her.

As I was watching the Michigan State Spartans play in their first round game, I was also using the Game Changer app to keep track of how the action was going down in Gatlinburg, TN. The Lady Shamrocks had a back and forth game with the Bentworth Bearcats, but they eventually came away victorious winning 8 to 5. Despite the high score, I can't help but feel they are a little rusty.

They play again this morning at 11:00 AM and you better believe I will be watching.

In case you were living under a rock, there was also a couple of basketball games on yesterday. More accurately, there were 16 games played yesterday in the opening round of the NCAA Men's Tournament. Nine seed Michigan State started things off with a bang defeating eight seed Mississippi State 69 to 51. There were a ton of turnovers in the game, but thankfully they were equal across both sides otherwise things might have turned out much differently for the Spartans.

Not to be outdone, the number 11 seed Duquesne Dukes upset the 6 seed BYU Cougars 71 to 67. I actually had BYU winning that game in my bracket, but it doesn't screw things up too badly.

Many of the games went just about how you would expect based on the seeding, but there were a few that really surprised everyone.

3 seed Creighton beat 14 seed Akron, 2 see Arizona beat 15 seed Long Beach State, and 1 seed North Carolina beat 16 seed Wagner.

3 seed Illinois beat 14 seed Morehead State, 7 seen Dayton came back from being down 18 points with seven minutes left in the game to beat 10 seed Nevada, and 7 seed Texas beat 10 seed Colorado State. That second one was a bit hard for me because I had CSU winning that game. Thankfully, it still doesn't impact my bracket too much.

Eleven seed Oregon beat 6 seed South Carolina in a big upset, but the biggest one came at the hands of 14 seed Oakland beating 3 seed Kentucky. Oakland University is just about an hour and a half down the road from where I live. They are a team that Michigan State plays early every season and they always give them fits.

It's no surprise to me that they were able to pull off the upset against Kentucky, but I still feel bad for the Wildcats. They have a lot of really loyal fans and it seems like they are always getting disappointed. Trust me, as a lifelong Lions fan and a fan of the Spartans lately, I know how it feels.

Trust me, no one understands more than we do. On both the basketball and football side of things Kentucky always just seems to come up short. I hope it turns around for you.

Two seed Iowa State beat 15 seed South Dakota State, and 5 seed Gonzaga beat 12 seed McNeese.

Finally, 2 seed Tennessee beat 15 seed Saint Peter's, and 7 seed Washington State beat 10 seed Drake.

You might also notice that 11 seed North Carolina State upset 6 seed Texas Tech, but 4 seed Kansas beat 13 seed Samford.

That last one has me a bit salty mostly because I don't like Kansas, but also because I had Samford winning. Again, much like the other games, it shouldn't impact my bracket too badly.

The good news is, I didn't have Kentucky making it past the second round, so as long as Oakland doesn't keep winning, I should be good.

There are another 16 games today and then we move on to the second round of games on Saturday. Unfortunately, with the win yesterday, Michigan State now has to play the number 1 seed North Carolina team, so this could be a short tournament for them. I hope not though. They have the potential, they just need to execute.

I guess we will know in a couple of days.

Check back on Monday as I give you a recap from all the first and second round action that happened this weekend.

I had the noose ready. Luckily I was able to resist. Only because I didn't bet that game.

I don't think that guy from Oakland can have a game like that every time. They are no joke though. First team to shut him down or he has an off night and it's over. As I said in my post, they give MSU fits every year.
