Lasers head to Marion, OH for a weekend tournament

My niece is back in action this weekend at a softball tournament in Marion, OH. This tournament is just about 45 minutes away from where they live, so they shouldn't need to rent a hotel room like they did last weekend.

I don't know what it is like in other countries, but in the US, it is a pretty significant undertaking for kids to play in these travel league sports. Families often have to pay several hundred if not thousands of dollars in dues to be on the team.

Then you still have to pay for your equipment and uniforms. Then, since they travel quite a bit and the distances are so large here in the States, you often have to book hotel rooms for the weekend.

Then, if you have multiple kids in multiple sports... forget about it. It's times like these that I am kind of glad I just have a dog. Though she isn't cheap either as she gets older!

Pool play starts tomorrow at 12:30 PM with a game against the Ohio Hawks Drake team. They are a 15U team just like the Lady Lasers Scarlet. It looks like they have a 3 - 8 record on the season, so depending on the other teams they have played, this could be an easy first game of the tournament for the Lasers.

I don't want to jinx it though.

Their second pool play game is at 4:00 PM EST tomorrow and they face off against the Ohio Outlaws Premier Pope 16U team.

I've come to learn that throwing adjectives(?) like Premier on the end of your name doesn't really mean anything. You often seen "Elite", "Premier", and "Gold" at the end of team names. Like I said, it's not that they are awesome. It's just that they are a little better than the other team that organization has. Think of it like junior varsity and varsity.

The Outlaws record is 7 - 5, so this could be a tougher game for the Lasers. You just never know. It's possible the Outlaws haven't played very good teams up to this point.

Plus, when the Laser bats get going, it's hard to gain any ground against them.

Pool play continues on Saturday with their first game being at 10:45 AM, and their second game at 4:00 PM again. Bracket play starts after that. Sometimes they start it up later on Saturday, but more often than not, the games will start on Sunday morning.

I'd honestly rather see the ladies do horrible during pool play and then turn things up for bracket play versus doing great in pool play and then getting bounced out in the first round of bracket play.

With a record of 13-11 and 1 tie, they have a lot of experience under their belts so far this year. In fact, they have won more games that the other two teams have even played (almost). That's pretty impressive.

It looks like on Saturday they are going to be going up against some teams I have seen them face in the past. I hope they can use that to their advantage and come away with some good hits behind the plate and some great plays in the field.
