Lasers shine at Scenic City!

The Ohio Lasers Scarlet team had a big showing this past weekend down in Tennessee for the Scenic City Fall Showcase. As I mentioned in this post, my niece and her parents made the seven hour drive from Columbus, OH down to Chattanooga, TN to play in her last softball tournament of the Fall season.

@mrsbozz and I watched every single game from the comfort of our home in Michigan and I have to admit, it looked like it was a pretty perfect weekend down there. My sister in law said the weather was amazing, warm during the day (but not too hot) and chilly at night just to remind you that it is fall after all.

The Lady Lasers went 6 and 1 on the weekend and just between you and me, the one loss they had I think could have easily been a win for them if they had been just a little more focused. It didn't feel like the team was out of their league with any of their opponents.

My niece even hit a clutch home run in one of the game to put them ahead and win them the game. It was pretty awesome to watch.

The action started at around 5:00 on Friday night with their first game of the weekend. It was a close game with the Lasers coming out on top 2 to 1. They then played their second game of the night at 8:00 and came away with a 7 to 5 victory.

One thing I noticed about this weekend was the fact that the ladies often found themselves playing from behind the other team, but they always rose to the occasion and ended up coming out on top.

Saturday morning they started bright and early with a game at 9:30 AM. This cut into the time @mrsbozz and I had planned on doing fall cleanup in our yard, but we didn't mind to much pushing that back a bit. We still got everything accomplished we had wanted to that day.

That first game ended up being a 6 to 5 win for the Lady Lasers. They then followed that game with a smashing showing on Saturday at 5. They beat the other team 12 to 0. It was an impressive route. I did notice that my niece got walked quite a bit this weekend. I don't know if the other teams had heard she was dangerous or if it was just chance.

The good news is, she is so fast, that it doesn't really matter how she gets on base, she will usually score. I've seen her cover the gap from first base to home plate in the blink of an eye. It's pretty amazing.

Saturday night was the game where my niece had her clutch home run and they took that game 8 to 6. Word is there were a lot of university coaches at this tournament, so the players were doing their best to look good for their prospective coaches.

My sister in law told us that after my niece hit that home run, one of the coaches from a university that she has visited came over and said "I've been waiting all day to see that, tell her good job, I'm going home now". That's pretty cool I think.

Sunday morning things started a little slow for the Lasers at 9:30 am again. This was the sole game that they lost over the weekend. They fell 2 to 6 and I honestly feel like it could have been a win for them. The defense looked a little sloppy. Which I guess isn't surprising when you consider this was their sixth game in three days.

I'd be tired too!

The final game started a little late at 2:30 PM and they came away with a 10 to 2 victory. It was a great way to end the tournament before the long drive back home. I expect they made it back to Columbus sometime around midnight last night and then all three of them have school this morning (either as a student or as work).

I'm really proud of my niece and everything she has accomplished this year in softball. Stay tuned for her full Fall stats. I will be sharing them as soon as she posts them.

Now, it's time for basketball season!
