NCAA Football Week 5 Recap: I didn't watch a single game

Football.png

I know what you're going to say... How can you write a recap post about football when you just admitted that you didn't watch any of it. Trust me, it isn't that hard. Yahoo gives me all the scores, plus you get some pretty good replays from the sports channels.

My job is just giving you that same information with my charm and wit which is probably what really brings you here in the first place anyway right?

I have a good excuse... My wife and I drove down to Columbus, OH to watch my niece play softball on Saturday. We were basically at the ball fields from 9 in the morning until 7 or so at night. It was a long day....

The good news is, if I am not able to watch, I don't have to see my Michigan State Spartans get beaten once again. I knew it was going to be a tough weekend going against Maryland on Saturday. They gave U of M fits the week before, so I had a feeling it might be a bloodbath.

Thankfully, MSU at least made it a little bit of a game and didn't get completely annihilated like they did against Minnesota a week ago.

Probably one of the biggest games of the day went to Texas Christian blowing Oklahoma out of the water. They beat them 55 to 24 which is quite surprising given the fact that they were not ranked and Oklahoma was. Now things are reversed it seems.

It looks like Tulane took Houston into overtime and beat them by three points. BYU notched another win against Utah State. UCLA #18 took #21 Washington to town. That is pretty sad considering the fact that Washington beat Michigan State a couple of weeks ago. Once UCLA makes it into the Big 10 it could be even harder for MSU to have a winning record.

Boston College beat Louisville by one point at Boston College. I bet that was a pretty exciting team for the home fans. U of M just continues to win and though they haven't really faced any stiff competition yet, they continue to be ranked #4 in the nation. I have a problem with that on so many levels, but I honestly don't have enough time to rant about the Wolverines here. It was bad enough having to drive through Ann Arbor twice this weekend on my way to and from Ohio.

Purdue beat Minnesota by ten points. Hopefully that isn't a sign of just how bad the Spartans are this year.

In a bit of a surprise, Illinois beat Wisconsin by 24 points. That's no small margin and it comes as a surprise to me. Could we see the Fighting Illini in the top 25 at some point this season?

Kentucky fell to Ole Miss in what has to be a heartbreaker for the Wildcats. Their season has been going pretty decent so far. The good news is, the loss only dropped them down to #13, so that is good.

I don't know what the competition is like in their conference, but James Madison has been showing up on my feed with some big wins this year. They could be setting themselves up for a decent bowl bid come the holidays.

It appears the Seminoles at Florida State have landed squarely back to Earth. Their most recent loss to Wake Forest has to sting give the big win(s) they had earlier in the season.

North Carolina must think it is basketball season putting up an almost basketball-esque score against Virginia Tech. 41 to 10 is a pretty decent win.

Kansas beat Iowa state in what looked to be a pretty defense heavy game with a final score of 14 to 11 in the Jayhawks favor.

Ohio State had a big game against Rutgers which resulted in a pretty big physical altercation on the field. I've got a lot of thoughts about this one. If you want you can find the video, just go to Youtube and type in Ohio State Rutgers fight. I think the hit was definitely late and out of bounds. the fact that the Buckeyes were doing a fake punt when they were up 49 to 10 was just ridiculous though. Have a bit more class than that Ohio State. I guess I wouldn't expect any less though.

I would have expected the Penn State win over Northwestern to be a bit more of a blowout, but it ended up being only 10 points.

I'm not sure when it happened but Alabama seems to have moved into the #1 spot. I guess Georgia's 4 point win over Missouri wasn't as convincing as the 49 point beating Bama gave Arkansas. We all knew Alabama at #1 was coming anyway right?

It came as a shock to me to see that Nebraska beat Indiana by a good 10+ point margin. I don't know if that speaks to the fact that Nebraska might be turning the corner or Indiana just sucks that bad.

I just realized, I lied a bit at the beginning of this post. I did watch some of the Clemson/North Carolina State game when we got home from softball on Saturday night. I am a bit surprised by the outcome. NC State had the Tigers on their heels for a bit there in the first half.

If I had to guess, one of the most exciting games this weekend was probably the LSU/Auburn game. LSU came away with the win, but it really looks like Auburn made them work for it. 21 to 17 was the final score.

I am really hoping I get to watch a bit more football next weekend. I know I have some games that I will be attending down the road. My nieces and nephews have soccer and football. Fingers crossed they don't go long and I make it home to spend some time on the couch watching college football!
