NCAA Men's Hoops Wrap-Up 1/24/2022

As has typically been the case lately, my Friday night started off with watching my two nieces play basketball. It is really great that we can stream the games at home now. In the past we would have went about our evening and just waited for text updates of the score. Now, we can actually see the action and that is amazing.

They both won a couple of close contests. I think the games were actually a bit tighter than they should have been. The ladies were playing a bit sloppy and it ended up giving the opponent more of an opportunity than they should have had. A win is a win though and it was a joy to watch them play.

After those games finished up, my wife and I switched over to Youtube TV and started watching the Michigan State game. The #14 team was taking on the #8 team and I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little worried about this game. Wisconsin has been on fire lately and given the previous showing by the Spartans, it could have been a very disappointing game for them.

Instead, I am happy to say they rose to the occasion and gave us one of the two upsets that night. In fact, there were only two top 25 games played on Friday night and both of them were upsets. How cool is that?

Unranked Maryland took down #17 Illinois by a pretty heft margin.

I am a little ashamed to say I didn't stay awake for the whole Michigan State game. It didn't start until 9 and given some real life stuff that had been going on, my wife and I had a pretty rough week. I was struggling to even keep my eyes open before halftime.

The Spartans were playing strong right from the get go, and looking back at the stats, it looks like there were a lot of things they were really doing right on Friday night. I hope they can carry those over into their game against Illinois this week. That is likely going to be another really tough competition.

Saturday gave us 14 games in the top 25 with only one of them being postponed.

There were only three upsets that happened and all of them were with some mid-level teams right now. Unranked Missouri State beat #22 Loyola Chicago, unraked TCU beat #15 Iowa State, and #24 Tennessee beat #13 LSU.

Since The Volunteers are my "adopted" team, it was nice to see them do so well. I hope they can keep it up and make it to the tournament.

Given their record so far this year, Nebraska was probably pretty happy that their game against Ohio State got postponed. Theyare doing just about as bad as U of M...

Sunday brought us only four games and all of them were played without delay.

The only upset of the day came from unranked Marquette beating #20 Xavier. It is really interesting to see how much movement there has been in the Big East with upsets and things like that. It is going to get really exciting come time for their conference tournament.

That's really all I have for this weekend. I think it is intersting to note that on Saturday Kansas State almost got the upset from #7 Kansas, only falling short by three points...

On a side note, I don't know if you, like me, watched any NFL football this weekend, and while I am glad the Rams won, the whole game felt very scripted. I know a lot of people think the NFL and other professional sports are all predetermined based on the casinos and other factors. I have never really subscribed to that theory, but after watching the game this past weekend. It can totally understand why people feel that way now.
