NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament Recap: BUSTED

If your NCAA bracket isn't busted by this point, you are either clairvoyant or from the future. I don't think anyone could have anticipated the carnage that took place this past weekend. I know this probably isn't the first time, but as of last night, there are zero number 1 seed teams in the final four. In fact, I am pretty sure the highest seeded team in the final four is a 3 seed.

Let's dig into what happened to get us here...

Friday night we had the other batch of Sweet 16 games. If you want to find out what happened to the Thursday night ones, check out my blog post from Friday of last week.

In a game that I think made most of the country smile, five seed San Diego State took down the tournament favorite and 1 seed Alabama in a stunning victory. I was busy watching some shows with my wife, so I didn't get a chance to watch the game, but I was paying attention to the score on my phone.

As the clock got closer and closer to ticking down to zero and The Aztecs maintained their lead I got more and more excited.

Before I knew it the game as over and the controversial run by Alabama was finished. I'm really glad we can now move on with the rest of the tournament without having to wonder if Alabama should really be there given everything that is orbiting their "star" player.

There is a saying in basketball: "ball don't lie". Usually it is applied to circumstances where a team might get a bad call in their favor, but then they miss the ensuing shot or they immediately turn the ball back over. It's implied that the ball distributes justice of its own accord as it sees fit.

I think that phrase applies perfectly in the case of Alabama.

Meanwhile, another 1 seed when down when 5 seed Miami beat Houston. Okay, let's be honest here. I'm kind of more surprised that it took Houston this long to get bounced out. That's not to say they aren't a good team, but we all know their strength of schedule was a fraction of some of the other teams in the tournament.

Either way, they got completely beat down losing 89 to 75. Six seed Creighton took out the tournament darling 15 seed Princeton. Honestly, Princeton shouldn't feel to bad about this one. They had an amazing run doing what most 15 seed teams never get the chance to do. A Sweet 16 appearance is a good season for anyone I think.

Finally, 2 seed Texas took down 3 seed Xavier 83 to 71.

Saturday we had the Elite 8 games for the teams that played on Thursday night.

In an absolutely stunning game, 9 seed Florida Atlantic took down 3 seed Kansas State. You might remember that was the Kansas State team that narrowly defeated Michigan State. It was a 79 to 76 victory for the Owls. It really makes you wonder how MSU could have done if Nowell hadn't had the game of his career that night.

In another stunning upset, 4 Seed UConn took down 3 seed Gonzaga in an absolute beat down 82 to 54. I didn't get to watch the game, but I'd be interesting to hear what happened. Either the Huskies completely shut them down or it was just an off night for the Zags.

Finally, there were two more games yesterday and that is when my bracket completely shattered. With Texas being my overall pick I was still in the game until Miami came out of nowhere and took them out 88 to 81. I'm not sure even Miami fans were expecting the team to do this well.

Talk about getting hot at just the right time. Miami is suddenly the team to beat in this thing in my opinion.

San Diego State rolled along taking down Creighton by a narrow margin of 57 to 56.

To be fair, there had always been talk about UConn being a tournament dark horse. There are likely some people who took the chance and had them as the tournament champion. That is looking a little closer to reality after this past weekend.

Now we have to wait a full week for the Final Four games to be played. I have to admit. These are going to be pretty epic. I expect San Diego State should take care of Florida Atlantic, but that Miami/UConn game could be anyone's guess. If I had to pick a single game to watch next weekend I would definitely go with the Miami/UConn game.

Who am I kidding though, I am going to be on vacation, so I will likely be sitting at a bar somewhere warmer than I am now watching both games!
