NCAA Mens Hoops 1/27/2020 Recap

The weekend of college hoops started off in dramatic fashion. I knew this was probably going to be a good game. As you can see, Marquette was able to force Butler into overtime. It would have been cool for the underdog to win this one, but The Bulldogs came away with the four point victory.

As you can see, there were a ton of top 25 teams playing on Saturday this past weekend. After those two huge loses, it appears Auburn might be on the right track once again, securing a victory over Iowa State.

Although it wasn't an upset, the Illinois over Michigan win kind of surprises me. Michigan started the season really great, but has been on a downward spiral over the past ten games or so. I expected this game to go a different way since The Wolverines had some court advantage. In fact, they did keep it pretty close most of the game. It was spectacular push my the Illini at the end that gave them the win.

The Villanova/Providence game was closer than I think a lot of people would have anticipated and hats off to Nebraska for almost getting the upset over Rutgers at home. Even though they didn't win, that score is a pretty big accomplishment for a team that has been struggling this year.

SMU over #20 Memphis was our first upset of the weekend. Meanwhile, Arizona State over #22 Arizona was our second one. My wife's cousin went to ASU, so I am a little biased. What a thrilling game ending in a one point victory!

Most of the other matchups on Tuesday were pretty standard with the exception of two... #18 Texas Tech took #15 Kentucky into overtime. That is not very surprising given the on and off struggles Kentucky has had this year, but in the end they were able to come out on top.

Also, #5 Florida State almost got beat by Notre Dame. For being ranked 5th in the nation. I feel that FSU has some inconsistencies that may make them an easy target in the tournament. They have only lost twice, but it feels like much more than that given some of the games I have seen them play in.

Sunday was a great day! Michigan State recovered from their loss to Indiana on Thursday night and pretty much dominated the away game against Minnesota. It was good to see them playing well and controlling the game. This moves them into first place in the Big 10 even with Illinois winning this weekend.

#17 Maryland had a close win over Indiana. Despite this loss, I still think Indiana should break the top #25 when the new rankings come out.

All of the other games went about the way you would expect. I think San Diego State is definitely going to be a team to watch come tournament time. I really would have expected more than two upsets this weekend given how many games there were. Instead, there were many very close games that could have went one way or the other having been decided by two points or less.

Only two top 25 games on tonight, but I think they both have the potential to be really good. I think Wisconsin has a good chance of beating Iowa even though it is a home game for the Hawkeyes. I also think that Oklahoma State has a good chance at home against Kansas. The Jayhawks are down at least one player from the brawl a couple of weeks ago. It is possible he may never come back to play being suspended for twelve games by the NCAA and indefinitely by Kansas.

nice. Nebraska nearly scrapped out a W upset. I guess they are much better at b-ball than they are at football this year.
