NCAA Top 25 Hoops Weekend Recap

It was quite the exciting weekend in the world of NCAA men's basketball. Especially for the top 25 teams. Probably the best game I watched all weekend once again wasn't even a college game. My nieces High School Varsity team claimed the district championship on their home court. It was pretty cool watching them cut down the nets and all of that.

Now they head to the Regional competition where their first opponent is a team with five Division 1 college commits. It should be a tough challenge for them.

While college basketball is getting closer and closer to its endgame, I notice the other day that pre-season baseball games are starting to be played. It finally feel like things are getting back to normal a little bit...

Friday night gave us one game with #21 Loyola Chicago beating unranked Southern Illinois.

Saturday on the other hand gave us lots more action with 16 games being played and only one being postponed.

The upsets were plentiful on Saturday.

Let's start with unranked Auburn over #25 Tennessee. It was a close game, but the Tigers proved stronger. I almost watched this game and now seeing the score I am glad I didn't. I am starting to think my theory about whichever team I cheer for does bad is starting to hold true.

It makes me wonder if I should cheer for U of M.

#18 Texas Tech took down #14 Texas in what could be considered a minor upset.

Unranked Oklahoma State beat #7 Oklahoma in an overtime in-state rivalry. It looks like it was a really great game!

Speaking of unranked teams, North Carolina took down #11 Florida State on Saturday as well. Unranked Xavier beat #12 Creighton, and unranked Utah beat #19 USC.

In probably the biggest upset on Saturday, #17 Kansas handed #2 Baylor their first loss of the season. I saw a lot of headlines that talk about how poorly Baylor played and that may be true, but let's not discredit Kansas and the skill of their team in this upset victory.

Gonzaga continues to win. Nuff said.

Sunday gave us unranked Butler taking down #8 Villanova and #9 Iowa beating #4 Ohio State.

With two huge upsets this past week, Ohio State should drop pretty significantly in the polls.

Michigan State had a showing that was pretty typical of their season against Maryland. With their path set on a collision course with Michigan soon, they really needed to do better in that game against Maryland. It was hard to even watch and I ended up flipping back and forth between other things. Henry wasn't nearly as hot as he has been, but I don't blame him. There are plenty of other people on the team who need to step up.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens on Selection Sunday and who actually makes it to the tournament. I think there are some teams like Butler, Xavier, and Georgetown that have had some significant wins through the season and they should definitely get in at maybe a higher seed.

Anyway, that is all I have for basketball today. Check back on Friday when I recap all the action from the week.

Winding down finally. I hope the conference tourneys go off without problems. There could be some really fun games to watch as some of the blue bloods try a last ditch effort to cement a spot in the dance.

Incidentally, I wrote a post about reffing in here somewhere. As a hoops fan, you might find it interesting. And, it will give you the added bonus of having something to comment on. lol It's hard to find good stories to read in here right now with all the Actifit and soccer stuff....another reason I'm happy to see yours pop up. :-)

I used to do an Actifit post per day. I did it for a good year solid until I realized the rewards were so small. I need to find something fill the gap. Basketball is good for that and then once Baseball gets going I should be set. Ref'ing is a tough job for sure.

Yeah, the conference tournaments are going to be nuts. I am looking forward to them. First rounds of the main tournament should be good as well!
