NCAA Top 25 Weekend Wrap-Up 1/10/2022: All the Upsets!

To say this was a crazy sports weekend would be a bit of an understatement. We had multiple NFL games go into overtime, the Lions won, and on the NCAA basketball side of things there were upsets pretty much every way you turned.

Before we get to that, I just want to talk about my nieces basketball games that I got the chance to watch online this past weekend. My younger niece that plays on the Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity teams was finally able to play again. She had been diagnosed positive for Covid and had to sit for ten days. Needless to say it was killing her not being able to play.

The freshman and JV teams were able to pull out victories from the teams that the matched up against. It was actually a really interesting night becuase they were playing one of their biggest rivals. On the varsity side of things the opposing team had a player that had committed to a division 1 school, so they were very nervous about that.

In the end, they didn't need to be and as they often do, they went on to win the game by at least 20 points. It just goes to show you how it takes more than one person to make a team great.

Friday night there were two games but only one of them was played. #22 Xavier took down unranked Butler by about 15 points. No big deal there. It wasn't until Saturday that things really started to heat up.

I ran to my parents house on Saturday morning, but made sure I was home in time to catch the Michigan State/Michigan game. Imagine my disappointment when turned on the game only to find out it had been postponed because U of M had a Covid outbreak.

Seems a bit convienent to me, but what do I know. I am a State fan, so I am always going to see a cop out whether it is there or not.

This did give me a chance to watch the #19 Villanova versus unranked DePaul game. While it wasn't one of the upsets, it was still a pretty decent game. Most of the first half DePaul looked like they were going to edge out Nova.

Two other games besides Michigan State/Michigan were postponed on Saturday, that still gave us seventeen chances of seeing an upset.

Let's start with unranked Oklahoma State taking down #14 Texas in a little border skirmish. Next up, unranked Missouri over #15 Alabama, unranked San Diego State over #20 Colorado, and #25 Texas Tech over #6 Kansas.

The San Diego State one doesn't surprise me that much. They have had some decent teams over the past couple of years. There is a decent amount of talent moving through that program and it has shown come touranment time.

That wasn't the end of the upsets though. We also got to see #21 LSU take down #18 Tennessee, unranked Oklahoma beat #11 Iowa State, and most stunning of all, unranked Miami beat #2 Duke by two points!

As we know, it is still early in the season a couple loses here or there don't really matter as long as you are solid during your conference touranment. What I think this does show is that no team is bulletproof and everyone has a shot. If you are an unranked team out there and you don't believe that, it is your own fault if you don't make it to the big dance.

Sunday gave us only two top 25 games and they were both in the Big 10. Sadly neither of them were upsets, but there was an interesting statistic that I pulled from one of my news feeds about the Big 10.

Apparently, this is the first time in the past 25 seasons that the top three scorers in the nation have all been from the same conference (after at least two games have been played).

I think it is important to note that only one of those three players is on a team that is ranked in the top 25. Just another example of how it takes more than one player to make a team great.
