NFL Week 13/College Football Conference Championship Update: There were some great games this weekend!

Football.png

While this was technically week 14 for college football, most of us simply know it as championship weekend. This was the weekend where most of the conferences had their championship game. Powerhouse teams from all over the country met head to head to determine who would reign supreme in each conference.

There were a couple of games that while important, the outcome seemed to already be determined before the game even started.

#1 Georgia was sure to win over #17 LSU and true to form they did, 50 to 30. Likewise #2 Michigan was a shoe in to win over unranked Purdue. Yep, that happened as well 43 to 22. I had some hope for unranked North Carolina to upset #7 Clemson, but that unfortunately didn't happen. Clemson crushed them 39 to 10.

By the way, if you think the fact that a number 2 team went up against an unranked team for the conference title, you wouldn't be alone. It is pretty clear that the Big 10 needs to do some shifting around of which teams fall into each division. Having Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, and Penn State all in the same division is just ridiculous.

Probably the two most exciting games of the season were the #8 Utah versus #10 USC game, and #9 Kansas State versus #3 TCU.

Just to be clear, those ranks are updated as of yesterday. USC falling to Utah 24 to 47 stunned a good portion of the country. It suddenly gave Ohio State hope that they might still make it into the playoffs despite their loss to Michigan a week earlier.

Then, in what I feel was one of the best games I have watched in quite some time, Kansas State upset the favorite TCU 31 to 28 in over time. It was a pretty amazing game. K-State honestly dominated most of the game. The TCU quarterback was struggling to hit his targets and it wasn't until he started running the ball himself that things started to turn.

K-State just couldn't handle defending against he QB run and since it was so late in the game, they had little time to adjust. It's actually a miracle that they still pulled out the win because by the end of the game, the momentum had shifted to TCU's favor.

This game was a joy to watch and like I said, probably the most exciting college game of the weekend.

On the NFL side of things, the best thing I can think of that happened this weekend was the fact that the Lions won. After that close loss to Buffalo on Thanksgiving day, they came out hungry this weekend. Of course, Jacksonville has been doing pretty horrible this season, they are second to last in the AFC South, but a 40 to 14 win for the Lions is something to be proud of.

You can laugh at me all you want, but I think the Lions are going to get a wild card spot in the playoffs.

Once again, we had a fair number of games where the winner was decided by three or less points. That has been an ongoing theme this season. Buffalo handled the Patriots no problem. The Steelers beat Atlanta 19 to 16. Green Bay somehow came away with a win over Chicago. Thankfully, the Lions are still sitting above them in the rankings.

Washington and New York ended up going to overtime and ending their game with a 20 to 20 tie. That's so dumb. It's only the second tie we have seen this season, but in my opinion, it is two ties too many. The NFL needs to undo that stupid rule.

Denver continues to struggle and they fell to Baltimore 10 to 9. The Rams continue to struggle as well. They fell to the Seahawks 27 to 23. Again, as a Lions fan, this isn't a bad thing. Since they traded us some of their draft picks, the worse they finish this year, the better draft picks Detroit gets next year.

Garopollo got hurt, but San Francisco pulled out the win over a Dolphins team that has been kind of hot lately, 33 to 17.

Houston continues to be the biggest loser with a season record of 1 and 10. Trust me Houston, Detroit feels your pain. It will get better!

One of the biggest stunners of the week was the Bengals beating the Chiefs 27 to 24. That's three times in the past year that KC has fallen to Cincy. In fact, in one of those games, I think they had the exact same score too.

Dallas crushed Indy 54 to 19, and Tampa Bay edged out The Saints 17 to 16 in Monday night action.

As far as the playoffs...

Buffalo is still looking good one game above Miami in the AFC East. Baltimore and Cincinnati are tied in the AFC North. Tennessee looks to be the clear favorite in the AFC South, and likewise with Kansas City in the AFC West.

In the NFC we have Philadelphia as the clear leader in the NFC East, Minnesota holds a similar position in the NFC North. The NFC South is a hot mess with Tampa Bay barely above Atlanta, but The Bucs are sitting at a 50% win/loss ratio. Finally, San Francisco rounds out the NFC West sitting just above Seattle.

If you asked me to call it right now, I'd say it's going to be a Buffalo/Philadelphia Superbowl. The Vikings could play spoiler though and of course, never count out the Lions!

I’m now interested in the Penn State vs. Utah Rose Bowl.

And yeah, Eagles are surprisingly good this year.

That should be a really good game! I will have to support the Big 10 of course. The only case where I won't be supporting the Big 10 is the championship playoff games. I'm a little sad to see that MSU didn't make it to a bowl game this year. Not surprising though.
