Opening Weekend

If the opening weekend for my nieces travel team is any indication of how their season is going to go this summer, then I am more than excited about what the next few months have in store. The Ohio Lasers Scarlet team took the short drive to downtown Columbus to play in the Lasers showcase on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday last weekend. @mrsbozz and I weren't able to drive down there for this weekend, but in a couple of weeks we are going to travel to the Cleveland area to watch her play.

Instead, we used the Game Changer app from Dick's Sporting Goods to stream the games on our television at home. It's actually a little nice watching from the comfort of your couch. You can yell anything you want when silly mistakes are made, and it's a lot cooler than sitting in the beating sun!

As I said, the action started on Friday with pool play games. These pool play games don't count against you in the tournament, but they establish your seed for bracket play. Doing well in the pool play games can give you a good draw for bracket play and make your path a little smoother for the following days.

Their first game against the Indiana Bombers 18U team was a tie game 1 to 1. That's another thing about pool play, games can end in a tie where as in bracket play they can not.

The second game of the day ended in a loss against a Cincy Doom national team with a final score of 4 to 2. Saturday was actually set to be an interesting day because my niece had to hit the road and head down to University to go through freshman orientation.

Thankfully, her team did well without her and their first pool play game on Saturday was a 7 to 0 win over an Indy Crush National team. They followed that game up with a 3 to 3 tie against an Indy Dreams team.

Right after orientation my niece and her family got on the road so she could be back for bracket play on Sunday morning. They started play early on Sunday with a 4 to 2 win against an Ohio Hawks team. Bracket play is win or go home and many times the Lady Lasers have struggled on Sunday in bracket play. This win was a welcome change for them.

Their second game was against a Premier FP team that ended in a 5 to 0 win for the Lasers Scarlet team.

Finally, things got pushed back for the later games and their day ended with a 4 to 0 loss against a Unity team.

It was a bit of a let down for their Sunday, but as I said, this was a better Sunday than they have had in the past, so I hope they can continue this momentum through the summer. This coming weekend they are traveling to Cleveland for a tournament, so I look forward to following those games from my campsite in Eastern Michigan.
