Playing at the next level

()

It's really hard to write this post because there was so much that happened in the world of football over the weekend. As per my usual schedule though, I will be covering that tomorrow and today it dedicated fully to basketball.

Thursday night @mrsbozz and I got to watch our niece play in a game that was streamed from their high school. I think I talked about it already on Friday, but it was a really good game. My niece played quite well and as always, I am very proud of her.

That's actually a running joke with her and I. Out of nowhere I will tell her that I am proud of her and she will just laugh and tell me thanks. It might not mean as much to her now, but I hope as she gets older, she will think back on that and realize just how important it was.

Friday night there were nine games in the top 25. All of them went the way you might expect, with the exception of one of them. That would be San Diego State versus #13 Gonzaga. SDSU beat Gonzaga by 10 points. While this was a bit of a shocking upset, if you have been following college basketball for a while, you probably know that San Diego State has been doing quite well the past few years. Don't let their lack of ranking right now fool you. This is a decent team.

Saturday there were 8 top 25 games played and once again, only one of them was an upset. Florida Gulf Coast beat #7 Florida Atlantic by just a handful of points. It's nice to see Memphis ranked in the teens. They have deserved to be in the top 25 for a while now.

One team that is still missing from the top 25 is my Michigan State Spartans. They have been playing much better now even though some of the games have been cupcake games. Actually, I was under the belief that their game against Indiana State on Saturday was a cupcake game, but ISU has a really good team. There is a chance they could squeak into the tournament this year.

I wouldn't let my preconceived notions fool you. This was a banner win for the Spartans. I have a feeling once we get into the heart of conference play, we will finally see them back in the top 25. The Spartans just keep building on their successes. I just hope they don't have a mid season collapse.

After watching the Spartans play on Saturday, @mrsbozz and I switched over and found ourselves watching the Wisconsin women's game. They were getting destroyed by Purdue, but our nieces played high school ball with a girl that is on the Wisconsin team. She was good even back then. It was really fun watching her play at such a high level in the Big 10. She did a great job too. Her name is Tessa Grady, so if you ever find your self watching a Wisconsin women's basketball game, keep your eye out for #12.

Finally, Sunday gave us only three top 25 games. The biggest of them being the huge upset by Stanford over #4 Arizona. It's pretty rare to see a team put up 100 points against a high caliber team such as Arizona.

It must have been a really off night for them!

That's all I have for today. With the holidays almost behind us, we should settle into some regular basketball action now. I'm kind of looking forward to things winding down a bit.
