There are other sports besides softball?

Of course I know there are more sports out there than softball. It gets easy to forget that this time of year though. With football and basketball behind us, it seems that the majority of my time in the Spring and Summer is dedicated to watching my nieces play softball.

Last night we got the chance to watch my brother in laws step daughter play with her high school Junior Varsity soccer team. We actually showed up a little late because they moved the time of the game from 5:30 to 4:30. Luckily the officials didn't get that message so they showed up late. That allowed us to see half of the first half and then the whole second half.

My niece plays on the defense side and she is one of the few players on the team that actually plays the whole game. She never gets subbed out. That kind of raises the question if they feel she is that important why isn't she playing on the Varsity squad?

I don't think she really cares, she is probably just happy that she gets to be out on the field. On the weekends she plays on a travel volleyball team and we are likely going to head down to Detroit next weekend to watch her play a couple of matches in that.

I will be honest, I still don't understand a lot about soccer. Off-sides is one of those things that confuses the heck out of me. I've said it before, but I don't think the officials even understand it sometimes. They just use it as a catch all for when they weren't paying attention!

It's funny because my niece has always been kind of short, so she needs to run extra hard to keep up with the kids that have longer legs. She does though and she is a rock star at it! I am really proud of her and how accomplished she has become at the game.

I was able to watch her break up a couple of plays that could have resulted in goals last night. Defense might not be as flashy as offense, but it is a vital part of the game.

In fact, they actually shut the other team out last night winning 1 to 0. Consider me a super proud uncle!

Although we missed the first part of the game, it was a really great evening watching her play. The sun eventually came out and the wind died down and we were able to sit comfortably and watch her play without freezing to death! That isn't always a given this time of year when you are watching soccer in Michigan!

The Tigers were off last night, but they start a new series tonight in Baltimore.

My younger of the two nieces that play softball had another rough loss last night with her high school team. Meanwhile, my oldest niece that plays college ball is actually in town right now and is going to play a local university. @mrsbozz and I are taking a half day to go and watch her team play.

I am really excited to see her.
