Tiffin Earns a Split in Tuesday Double Header

The Tiffin University lady dragons softball team continued their Florida road trip last night in a pair of games against St. Leo University. The games were supposed to start at 5 and 7 PM, but they pushed them forward to 4 and 6 PM due to some rain that was in the forecast.

Little did they know it wasn't going to make much difference...

Tiffin jumped out to an early lead and by the middle of the game they were leading 10 to 0.

Unfortunately, in the 4th inning the St. Leo bats came alive and by the end of the 5th inning the game was all tied up at 10 to 10.

The sixth and seventh innings were a pitchers duel with led the game into extra innings. By the time the 7th ended they were already past 7PM, so it was pretty clear the 6PM game time was not going to hold.

Luckily the field had lights otherwise they probably wouldn't have been able to play the second game.

The University rules for extra innings in softball dictates that a runner start on second base. Tiffin was able to take advantage of that and score two runs to make it 12 to 10. The bottom of the 8th inning had St. Leo put up another run, but they eventually fell short and Tiffin won the game 12 to 11.

My niece went 1 for 3 in the first game before she was pulled due to them changing the pitcher. She had some pretty awesome plays out in left field though and I am really proud of her. She was a little discouraged after last season and it is good to see her settling in.

At first it was a little embarrassing that the Dragons would give up such a huge lead and make it that close of a game, but we later learned that the St. Leo's team is a nationally ranked team.

Speaking of a pitchers duel, the second game didn't start until closer to 8PM and I think both teams must have been tired because the final score was 1 to 0 in favor of St. Leo.

In fact, Tiffin only got one hit the whole game and St. Leo got six but was only able to score one run.

My niece did not play the second game. Which is understandable. One of the pitchers on the Tiffin team also plays Left Field, so they put her in when the other pitcher is starting in case they need to flip flop the two players.

My niece knew this would be the case going into the season, so she is okay with it.

My compliments to the St. Leo pitcher Thomas who in the second game had ten strike outs. That's pretty impressive and a good sign of why they are nationally ranked.

The Dragons have two more games today against Florida Tech before they get a well deserved day off tomorrow. You know I will be giving you the full update tomorrow!
