New Clubs?

avatar

Hi friends,

I am on the fence about getting a set of new irons for my golf bag. I am playing the TaylorMade R7s, which are fairly old now, but there isn’t anything wrong with them.

I went the other day to the golf shop and hit a few different irons, but none really felt great. I also wasn’t hitting them as far as my current irons and I didn’t feel they wear spinning enough to give me stopping power on the green.

I am not torn - if my old clubs are still working well, do I need to spend the $,$$$ on new irons if they are about the same? I do want to look the part when I am playing with friends/business acquaintances/charity events and, in theory, technology should be better.

I think I need more data - I am going to research launch monitors so I can get definitive stats on my current clubs then compare them to some new sets.

To be continued…

Any advice?

Thanks for coming by,
Brian

I just spent a lot of time with a coach and picked clubs. First time I’ll have a matching set. Looking forward to this snow melting so I can use them outside.

I think you're not yet used to the new ones so they don't perform as well as your existing ones. Unless your clubs are 10-20 year old, I think there should be minimal improvement especially on the irons.

Golf is a lovely and interesting game and it's good you play it. Well, I would say the matter is completely up to your discretion. If you feel getting new clubs has more advantages than continuing with the old ones, then by all means go ahead and get them. It not then no. Thanks for writing. Have a nice day.

I guess the equipment in the golf shop might be quite expensive

I played for years with a set of Tommy Armour blades. Those were extremely unforgiving to say the least. I bought a set of the Taylomade R7 irons about a year after they came out. I love these irons. They hit great, are much more forgiving but allow you to do things with the ball still. The hell with buying new irons unless they are in bad condition or you fall in love with a set that you hit better.

You can repair the old one and it will work great. And you can keep a new copy, it can definitely be useful. Thanks for sharing 🙏

I think you should buy new ones bcz game is not fun if we don't have proper playing equipment. and it is necessary when your are playing with your friends or charity purposes.

The R7's are good clubs, I tend to use a mismatch of clubs but Taylormade makes some good quality stuff that performs well. If what you have is working I wouldn't be in too big a hurry to upgrade. I've got a couple that are nearing replacement, but as long as they give me good performance I'm keeping them!
