Wczoraj wybrałem się na spacer z Binche do opactwa Notre Dame De Bonne-Espérance i z powrotem. Ten jegomość na tytułowym zdjęciu to Gille, czyli uczestnik karnawału w Binche w tradycyjnym stroju z koszykiem pomarańczy w ręku. Jedną z atrakcji tego karnawału jest bitwa na pomarańcze. Stoi dumnie przed wejściem do parku pałacowego, między kolegiatą Saint-Ursmer a Muzeum Karnawału.

[ENG] Yesterday I took a walk from Binche to the Abbey of Notre Dame De Bonne-Espérance and back. The gentleman in the title photo is Gille, a participant in the Binche carnival in traditional costume with a basket of oranges in one hand. One of the highlights of this carnival is the battle of the oranges. It stands proudly in front of the entrance to the palace park, between the Saint-Ursmer church and the Carnival Museum.

Park pałacowy jest tylko wspomnieniem świetności tego miejsca. Palais de Binche był niegdyś rezydencją królewską hrabiów Hainaut, książąt Burgundii i władców Habsburgów. Najbardziej znaną mieszkanką była Maria Węgierska, gubernator Holandii. Pałac został zniszczony przez żołnierzy króla Francji Henryka II w 1554 r. Dziś pozostało tylko kilka średniowiecznych murów i fundamentów zamku.

[ENG] The palace park is just a reminder of the site's splendour. The Palais de Binche was once the royal residence of the Counts of Hainaut, the Dukes of Burgundy and the Habsburg rulers. Its most famous resident was Marie of Hungary, governor of the Netherlands. The palace was destroyed by the soldiers of King Henry II of France in 1554. Today, only a few medieval walls and foundations of the castle remain.

Kilkanaście metrów od grubych średniowiecznych murów krajobraz zmienia się jak, za dotknięciem czarodziejskiej różdżki. Chwilę zajęło mi dojście do RAVeL Ligne 108, czyli ścieżki rowerowej zbudowanej w miejsce nieużywanej linii kolejowej Binche - Erquelinnes, prawie 15 kilometrów bardzo dobrze utrzymanej asfaltowej ścieżki, po której nie raz jeździłem rowerem. Tym razem spacerowałem w stronę opactwa Notre Dame De Bonne-Espérance. Opactwo nie jest położone bezpośrednio przy tej ścieżce, dlatego musiałem przez kilkaset metrów podążać polną drogą pełną błota. Gdzieś w tym błocie zgubiłem osłonę do obiektywu aparatu.

[ENG] A few metres from the thick medieval walls, the landscape changes as if by magic. It took me a while to reach RAVeL Ligne 108, the cycle path built to replace the disused Binche - Erquelinnes railway line, almost 15 kilometres of very well-maintained tarmac path on which I have cycled more than once. This time I was walking towards the abbey of Notre Dame De Bonne-Espérance. The abbey is not located directly on this path, so I had to follow a dirt road full of mud for a few hundred metres. Somewhere in this mud, I lost my camera lens cap.

Na początek historia opactwa w wielkim skrócie. Na początku XII wieku Raynard, pan Croix-lez-Rouveroy, podarował opatowi Prémontré, część swojej ziemi. Opat Hugues de Fosses wysyła mnichów, którzy w 1127 roku założyli tam nowy klasztor. Przez wieki było dobrze zarządzane, pomnażano majątek i stan posiadania, aż przyszła rewolucja francuska, wtedy to opactwo zostało zamknięte i sprzedane. Ocalałym kanonikom udało się je odkupić, jednak trudności w zreformowaniu wspólnoty były tak duże, że w 1821 roku postanowiono przekazać swoje opactwo seminarium duchownemu diecezji Tournai. Duchowni z Tournai założyli tam w 1830 roku placówkę oświatową, która funkcjonuje do dziś pod nazwą uczelnią Notre-Dame de Bonne-Espérance. Zwykle wstęp na teren byłego opactwa jest niemożliwy, byłem tam kilka razy i zawsze główna brama była zamknięta. Wczoraj po raz pierwszy miałem szczęście, brama była szeroko otwarta, więc wszedłem nieśmiało na teren opactwa.

[ENG] To begin with, the history of the abbey in a nutshell. At the beginning of the 12th century, Raynard, lord of Croix-lez-Rouveroy, donated part of his land to the abbot of Prémontré. The abbot, Hugues de Fosses, sends monks to establish a new monastery there in 1127. For centuries, it was well run, the property and possessions multiplied, until the French Revolution came, at which time the abbey was closed and sold. The surviving canons managed to buy it back, but the difficulties in reforming the community were so great that in 1821 it was decided to hand over their abbey to the seminary of the diocese of Tournai. The clergy of Tournai established an educational establishment there in 1830, which still functions today under the name of Notre-Dame de Bonne-Espérance college. Usually entry to the former abbey is impossible, I have been there several times and always the main gate was closed. Yesterday, for the first time, I was lucky, the gate was wide open, so I tentatively entered the abbey grounds.

Pod tym mostem woda już nie płynie, ale najprawdopodobniej po tym moście wiodła jedna z dróg prowadzących na pałacowe wzgórze.

[ENG] The water no longer flows under this bridge, but it is likely that one of the roads leading to the palace hill led over this bridge.

Przy głównym placu w Binche znajduje się ratusz z okazałą Beffroi de Binche (dzwonnicą) i budynek teatru miejskiego.

[ENG] On the main square in Binche is the town hall with its magnificent Beffroi de Binche (bell tower) and the town theatre building.
