W upalną niedzielę wybraliśmy się do Brukseli, gdzie byliśmy umówieni na wspólny lunch z naszą córką i jej chłopakiem. Tym razem oni zaproponowali grecką restaurację daleko od centrum miasta, w dzielnicy Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. Jest to jedna ze spokojniejszych i najbezpieczniejszych dzielnic w Brukseli. Otacza ją kilka dużych parków, które w dni takie jak wczorajszy dają odrobinę wytchnienia od palącego słońca.

[ENG] On a hot Sunday, we went to Brussels, where we were meeting our daughter and her boyfriend for lunch. This time, they suggested a Greek restaurant far from the city center, in the district of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. It is one of the calmer and safest districts in Brussels. It is surrounded by several large parks, which on a day like that one, offer a bit of respite from the burning sun.

Po lunchu ruszyliśmy na krótki spacer w poszukiwaniu cienia i wytchnienia w jednym z tych parków. W centralnej części parku, nad niewielkim stawem, majestatycznie wznosi się XVIII-wieczna willa dumnie nazywana Château Malou. Choć nazywana jest „château” (zamek, pałac), jej architektura i pierwotne przeznaczenie to bardziej wiejska willa w stylu włoskim niż ufortyfikowany zamek. Wbrew nazwie, willa nie została zbudowana przez rodzinę Malou. Jej nazwa pochodzi od najsłynniejszego mieszkańca, premiera Julesa Malou, który kupił ją prawie 80 lat po jej wybudowaniu. Aktualnie obiekt jest własnością gminy Woluwe-Saint-Lambert; nie jest zamieszkany, służy jako miejsce wydarzeń kulturalnych.

[ENG] After lunch, we set off for a short walk in one of these parks, in search of shade and rest. In the central part of the park, by a small pond, majestically stands an 18th-century villa proudly named Château Malou. Although it is called a "château" (castle, palace), its architecture and original purpose are more that of an Italian-style country villa than a fortified castle. Contrary to its name, the villa was not built by the Malou family. Its name comes from its most famous resident, Prime Minister Jules Malou, who bought it nearly 80 years after it was built. Currently, the property is owned by the municipality of Woluwe-Saint-Lambert; it is not inhabited and serves as a venue for cultural events.

Kierując się w stronę centrum, przeszliśmy przez jeden z najpiękniejszych brukselskich parków – Parc de Woluwe. Park zajmuje teren 69 hektarów. Został zaprojektowany i stworzony pod koniec XIX wieku, właśnie w kontekście przygotowań do Wystawy Światowej w 1897 roku. Miał stanowić zieloną, luksusową oprawę dla alei i przyciągnąć zamożną burżuazję do osiedlania się w tej części miasta. Utworzenie parku jest nierozerwalnie związane z ambicjami „krwawego króla” Leopolda II. Duży park miał uatrakcyjnić aleję prowadzącą z centrum miasta do jego królewskiej rezydencji. Parc de Woluwe to prawdziwa oaza spokoju i zieleni, która oferuje mieszkańcom i turystom idealne warunki do relaksu, rekreacji i kontaktu z naturą, nie oddalając się przy tym od serca miasta.

[ENG] Heading towards the city center, we passed through one of Brussels' most beautiful parks – Parc de Woluwe. The park covers an area of 69 hectares. It was designed and created at the end of the 19th century, specifically in the context of preparations for the 1897 World's Fair. It was intended to provide a green, luxurious setting for the avenue and to attract the wealthy bourgeoisie to settle in this part of the city. The park's creation is inextricably linked to the ambitions of the "bloody king," Leopold II. The large park was meant to enhance the attractiveness of the avenue leading from the city center to his royal residence. Parc de Woluwe is a true oasis of peace and greenery, offering residents and tourists ideal conditions for relaxation, recreation, and connecting with nature, all without straying far from the heart of the city.
