Dziś zaczęliśmy zwiedzanie okolic Bordeaux. Około 70 kilometrów na zachód od miasta jest już wybrzeże Atlantyku oraz niezwykły cud natury – Dune du Pilat, czyli Wydmy Pilata, największa w Europie góra piasku. Dojeżdżając do tego miejsca, już z daleka widać ogromne góry piasku nad koronami sosnowego lasu.

[ENG] Today we started exploring the area around Bordeaux. About 70 kilometers west of the city lies the Atlantic coast and an extraordinary natural wonder – the Dune du Pilat (Pilat Dune), the largest mountain of sand in Europe. Approaching this place, you can see the huge sand dunes rising above the crowns of the pine forest from a distance.

Wspinaczka na Dune du Pilat to było jedno z tych doświadczeń, które totalnie przerosły nasze oczekiwania. Ten ogrom piasku, najwyższa wydma w Europie, robi naprawdę kolosalne wrażenie, zwłaszcza kiedy stoi się u jej podnóża. Wejście na szczyt wydmy „ogarnęliśmy” łatwiejszym sposobem, czyli weszliśmy po prostu po schodach, które tam zbudowano.

[ENG] Climbing the Dune du Pilat was one of those experiences that totally exceeded our expectations. This sheer mass of sand, the tallest dune in Europe, makes a truly colossal impression, especially when you stand at its base. We "handled" the ascent to the top of the dune the easier way, which meant we simply walked up the stairs that were built there.

A widok ze szczytu? Po jednej stronie bezkresny Atlantyk i Zatoka Arcachon, po drugiej zieleń sosnowego lasu – krajobraz po prostu zapierał dech w piersiach. Czułem się jak na środku pustyni, a jednocześnie nad oceanem – niecodzienne połączenie. To absolutnie obowiązkowy punkt na liście, by zobaczyć na własne oczy, jak potężna potrafi być natura. Miałem w planach dłuższy spacer po wydmie, która ma długość prawie trzech kilometrów, ale żona zbombardowała ten pomysł – nie najpewniej czuła się, stąpając po miękkim piasku.

[ENG] And the view from the top? On one side, the endless Atlantic Ocean and the Arcachon Bay; on the other, the green of the pine forest – the landscape was simply breathtaking. I felt like I was in the middle of a desert and by the ocean at the same time – an unusual combination. It is an absolute must-see on the list to witness with your own eyes how powerful nature can be. I had planned a longer walk along the dune, which is almost three kilometers long, but my wife shot down the idea – she didn't feel completely comfortable stepping on the soft sand.

Z wydmy jest około 10 minut jazdy samochodem do Arcachon, uroczego nadmorskiego miasteczka, wręcz idealnego do spędzenia tak pogodnej jesiennej niedzieli. Zwiedzanie zaczęliśmy od… uroczej włoskiej restauracji, gdzie zjedliśmy pizzę i smażone kalmary. O dziwo, łatwiej mi tam było się dogadać po włosku niż po francusku.

[ENG] From the dune, it's about a 10-minute drive to Arcachon, a charming seaside town, practically perfect for spending such a sunny autumn Sunday. We started our sightseeing with... a lovely Italian restaurant where we ate pizza and fried calamari. Surprisingly, it was easier for me to communicate in Italian there than in French.

Posileni, ruszyliśmy na niespieszny spacer po promenadzie nad Zatoką Arcachon. Z jednej strony można chłonąć widoki na zatokę, a z drugiej podziwiać elegancję tutejszych zabudowań.

[ENG] Having refueled, we set off for a leisurely stroll along the promenade next to the Arcachon Bay. On one side, you could soak up the views of the bay, and on the other, admire the elegance of the local architecture.

Prawdziwa magia zaczęła się jednak w Ville d'Hiver (Zimowe Miasteczko), z tymi niesamowitymi, wiktoriańskimi willami ukrytymi wśród zieleni, które przenoszą w inną epokę. Koniecznie trzeba się tam poszwendać!

[ENG] However, the real magic began in Ville d'Hiver (Winter Town), with its incredible, Victorian villas hidden among the greenery, which transport you to a different era. It's a must to wander around there!

Przy okazji dotarliśmy do Observatoire Sainte-Cécile (Obserwatorium Świętej Cecylii) – wieży obserwacyjnej, na którą można wejść. Spiralne schody zawieszone są na linach i w trakcie wchodzenia na górę mogą trochę się kołysać. Nie każdy był w stanie przezwyciężyć lęk. Kiedy czekałem na wejście, dwie kobiety cofnęły się na dół prawie z samego szczytu, przy okazji zmuszając do cofnięcia się idących za nimi ludzi. Żona, jakby przewidziała, że w jej przypadku może być podobnie, dlatego od razu usiadła na ławeczce i poczekała na mnie. Choć konstrukcja wydaje się ażurowa, widok z góry wynagradza lekki dreszczyk emocji. Panorama na całą zatokę i dachówki fantazyjnych rezydencji jest stamtąd po prostu genialna.

[ENG] Incidentally, we reached the Observatoire Sainte-Cécile (Sainte-Cécile Observatory)—an observation tower that you can climb. The spiral staircase is suspended on ropes and can sway a bit as you ascend. Not everyone was able to overcome their fear. While I was waiting to go up, two women retreated back down almost from the very top, incidentally forcing the people behind them to step back too. My wife, as if anticipating that a similar situation might occur in her case, immediately sat down on a bench and waited for me. Although the structure seems open (or: latticed), the view from the top compensates for the slight thrill. The panorama of the entire bay and the rooftops of the fanciful residences is simply brilliant from up there.
