Korzystając z pięknej przedwiosennej pogody (ok. 18°C), wybraliśmy się dziś do francuskiego miasta Arras. To niespełna półtorej godziny jazdy samochodem od Mons, więc to doskonałe miejsce na jednodniową wycieczkę.

[ENG] Taking advantage of the beautiful pre-spring weather (about 18°C), we headed to the French city of Arras today. It’s less than an hour and a half drive from Mons, making it a perfect spot for a day trip.

Arras leży w regionie Hauts-de-France i po dzisiejszej wizycie potwierdzam, że jest to jedno z najbardziej niedocenianych miast północnej Francji. Przegrywa popularnością z Lille, ale każdy, kto tu trafi, będzie zachwycony. To miejsce idealne dla osób zainteresowanych historią XX wieku i architekturą, szukających spokojnej atmosfery. Miasto nas oczarowało, choć spędziliśmy tam zaledwie kilka godzin i nie zdążyliśmy zobaczyć wszystkiego.

[ENG] Located in the Hauts-de-France region, Arras is—as I can now confirm—one of the most underrated cities in northern France. It might be less famous than Lille, but anyone who visits will be delighted. It’s a perfect destination for those interested in 20th-century history and architecture, or those looking for a laid-back, peaceful atmosphere. The city charmed us, even though we only spent a few hours there and didn't manage to see everything.

Pierwotnie mieliśmy zacząć od podziemnych korytarzy, czyli labiryntu średniowiecznych piwnic wykutych w kredzie, zwanych boves. Służyły one niegdyś do przechowywania towarów i piwa. Dotarliśmy tam jednak za późno na przedpołudniowe zwiedzanie, dlatego skierowaliśmy się w stronę cytadeli.

[ENG] We originally planned to start with the underground passages—a labyrinth of medieval chalk cellars known as boves, originally used for storing goods and beer. However, we arrived too late for the morning tour, so we headed toward the citadel instead.

Na zachód od centrum znajduje się XVII-wieczna cytadela zaprojektowana przez mistrza inżynierii wojskowej epoki Ludwika XIV – marszałka Vaubana. Twierdza ma kształt pięciokąta i zajmuje około 11 hektarów. Choć miała bronić Francji od północy, nigdy nie została wykorzystana w celach militarnych. Obecnie to jeden z najlepiej zachowanych przykładów architektury obronnej w regionie, oferujący rozległe tereny zielone, z których chętnie korzystali dziś spacerowicze i biegacze.

[ENG] To the west of the center lies the 17th-century citadel designed by the master of military engineering from the era of Louis XIV—Marshal Vauban. The pentagonal fortress covers about 11 hectares. Although intended to defend northern France, it was never actually used for combat. Today, it is one of the best-preserved examples of modern defensive architecture in the region, offering vast green spaces that were full of walkers and runners enjoying the weather today.

Obok cytadeli znajduje się brytyjski cmentarz wojenny – Cimetière Militaire du Faubourg d'Amiens. Miejsce to upamiętnia 35 942 żołnierzy Wspólnoty Narodów, którzy zginęli podczas I wojny światowej w rejonie Arras, a których miejsca pochówku pozostają nieznane.

[ENG] Next to the citadel is the British war cemetery—Cimetière Militaire du Faubourg d'Amiens. This site is dedicated to the 35,942 Commonwealth soldiers who died in the Arras sector during WWI and have no known grave.**

Następnie ruszyliśmy w stronę serca miasta, czyli Beffroi d'Arras (dzwonnicy) oraz ratusza na Place des Héros. O ile odrestaurowane kamieniczki wokół placu robią wrażenie, o tyle sam ratusz jest majstersztykiem. Trudno uwierzyć, że plac ten był totalnie zniszczony przez wojnę. Otaczają go rzędy 155 domów z charakterystycznymi schodkowymi szczytami i arkadami, pod którymi działają kawiarnie. Nad całością dominuje dzwonnica o wysokości 75 metrów, wpisana na listę UNESCO. Warto pamiętać, że to właśnie stąd wywodzą się słynne arrasy, które zdobią nasz Wawel.

[ENG] Afterward, we walked toward the heart of the city: the Beffroi d'Arras (belfry) and the Town Hall on Place des Héros. While the restored townhouses around the square are impressive, the Town Hall itself is a masterpiece. Looking at the square, it's hard to believe it was completely destroyed during the war. It is lined with 155 houses featuring characteristic stepped gables and arcades housing cafes and shops. Dominating it all is the 75-meter-high belfry, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s also worth noting that this is where the famous "arras" tapestries (like those at Wawel Castle) originated.

Po południu dotarliśmy do Carrière Wellington. To podziemne muzeum poświęcone nowozelandzkim górnikom-żołnierzom, którzy drążyli tunele łączące średniowieczne piwnice, by wyprowadzić atak za pozycje niemieckie w kwietniu 1917 roku. To niepozorne miejsce dostarcza niezwykłych emocji i jest doskonałą lekcją historii. Szkoda jedynie, że nie zdążyliśmy na godziny otwarcia katedry; w zamian odwiedziliśmy kościół św. Jana Chrzciciela, podziwiając grę świateł na witrażach.

[ENG] In the afternoon, we reached Carrière Wellington, an underground museum dedicated to the brave New Zealander miner-soldiers. they dug tunnels connecting the medieval boves to lead an assault behind German lines in April 1917. This unassuming place near the railway station provides an extraordinary emotional experience and an excellent history lesson. Unfortunately, we missed the opening hours of the Arras Cathedral, so we visited the Church of St. John the Baptist instead, admiring the light filtering through the stained-glass windows.
