Dzień spędziliśmy na zwiedzaniu Antwerpii. W przypadku turystycznego wypadu nie jest to zazwyczaj pierwszy wybór – Antwerpia zdecydowanie przegrywa popularnością z Brugią, Gandawą czy Brukselą. Jednak nasi goście odwiedzili już te miejsca podczas poprzednich wizyt, więc nie było sensu zabierać ich tam ponownie.

[ENG] We spent the day exploring Antwerp. When it comes to a tourist getaway, it’s usually not the first choice—Antwerp definitely loses out in popularity to Bruges, Ghent, or Brussels. However, our guests had already visited those places during previous trips, so there was no point in taking them there again.

Zaczęliśmy od wizyty na majestatycznym dworcu Antwerpen-Centraal, gdzie oczywiście nie mogło zabraknąć kawy i gofrów. Później spacerowaliśmy po starówce; deszcz trochę nas postraszył, ale to w końcu Belgia – wiadomo, że pada tu często. Goście mogli poczuć ten klimat na własnej skórze. Chłodne chwile przeplatały się ze słonecznymi momentami, choć spacer nad brzegiem Skaldy, przy tym wietrze, nie był najlepszym pomysłem.

[ENG] We started with a visit to the majestic Antwerpen-Centraal station, where, of course, coffee and waffles were a must. Later, we walked through the old town; the rain gave us a bit of a scare, but this is Belgium, after all—it’s well known that it rains here often. Our guests got to experience the local climate firsthand. Chilly moments were interspersed with bursts of sunshine, though a walk along the banks of the Scheldt wasn't the best idea given the wind.

[ENG] The monument of the boy and his dog shown in the photo is located at Handschoenmarkt square, right in front of the Cathedral of Our Lady. It references the 1872 novel by Ouida titled A Dog of Flanders (Nello and Patrasche).

To poruszająca historia: Nello, biedny sierota, ratuje skatowanego psa pasterskiego, Patrasche'a, i od tej chwili stają się nierozłączni. Chłopiec marzy o byciu malarzem na miarę Rubensa, którego dzieła zdobią katedrę, ale jest zbyt biedny, by zapłacić za wstęp. Jego życie stopniowo legnie w gruzach, aż w końcu w Wigilię, bez dachu nad głową, trafia z wiernym psem do otwartej katedry. Tam po raz pierwszy widzi „Zdjęcie z Krzyża” Rubensa. Rankiem znajdą ich oboje zamarzniętych przed ołtarzem — w uścisku.

[ENG] It’s a deeply moving story: Nello, a poor orphan, rescues a beaten and abandoned draught dog named Patrasche, and from that moment on, they become inseparable. The boy dreams of becoming a painter as great as Rubens, whose masterpieces adorn the cathedral, but he is too poor to pay for entry. His life gradually falls apart until finally, on Christmas Eve, homeless and penniless, he finds his way into the open cathedral with his faithful dog. There, for the first time, he sees Rubens' The Descent from the Cross. In the morning, they are found frozen to death in front of the altar—locked in each other's arms.
