Australia Wins Cricket World Cup!

After 48 matches across almost 7 weeks of intense competition, the Cricket World Cup concluded last night with Australia beating the previously undefeated India in the Final. India lost the Coin Toss and were sent in to bat on a tricky surface to score 240 runs in the First Innings, only for Australia to chase down the total with 6 Wickets in hand and 7 Overs to spare. In cricket terms this sounds like a very comfortable victory, but in cricket it’s often the nuance of circumstances and conditions that is overlooked...

Australia played very well of course, but one of the most important factors of this game was the Coin Toss. In India there is often Dew which falls later in Day / Night matches that makes bowling hard (for spinners in particular) and can make the pitch a bit skiddy – leading to a more consistent bounce that is easier to hit. Australia were under pressure chasing the runs at 3 wickets for 47 in the 7th over but as conditions got easier to bat and the Dew settled in they were able to put a 4th wicket partnership together of 192 Runs between Travis Head (playing an Aggressor role) and Marnus Labuschagne (playing an Anchor role). A partnership of this size in a World Cup Final is simply epic and Travis Heads innings in particular will go down in history to be replayed on highlight reels for decades to come.

As an Australian myself, of course I am happy. This World Cup was Indias to lose and they looked pretty invulnerable all tournament only to lose the 1 game that really mattered. I feel for the fans who were looking pretty devastated in the massive crowd but also had to have a bit of a giggle after some of the shenanigans over various pitches that had occurred in the lead up.

As a cricket lover I don't like to see the Coin Toss have such a massive bearing on games like it did here (and they often do in India) plus I was a little bit disappointed in some of the massive variance in pitch quality. Some of the venues served up utterly flat roads that made the spectacle more like a game of hit and giggle T20 slog-fest, while other pitches were cracked and dusty, spinning sharply with variable and/or slow/low bounce. With such a massive variance the opportunity for pitch manipulation was just too overt and in my opinion it WAS exploited to the detriment of the tournament quality and integrity.

I don’t want to be too negative though because it was still a good tournament. A short time ago I sent out the winnings from my Sweepstakes. Our Winner was @dfinney who has collected 28 HBD for the Australia Win and Runner Up was @bitcoinman who received 12 HBD for drawing India. Thanks to everyone who got involved to support the Sweep. It was good fun and I hope that you got to enjoy some cricket over the last 7 weeks. I certainly did. Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi!

I have seen that moment when Australia won the world cup. Internet is flooded by their clicks and the way they won the world cup and their confidence is all just awsome.
They were crying with happiness and after all after long and hard competition they won the cup. Many Many Congratulations for their team.🎊🎉🎈

I knew it, if the only team that can defeat India in the finals, it was aus, i had told my wife, if there is going to be a final between India and aus, aus will win it easily an that's what happened.

Personally, I feel the pitch didn’t change that much. I know the commentators love to talk about ‘the dew factor’ and it can have an impact on games but I saw very little evidence of that yesterday.

For me, the real defining factor was India reverting to type and batting in an overly cautious manner. Part of that is due to their ridiculously long tail but it’s also a failed mentality. Kohil and KL Rahul batted over 100 deliveries without hitting a boundary with many of those balls bowled by Australia’s ‘5th bowler’. Yes the pitch was slow and not easy to hit on but they never showed any intent to do so.

By comparison Head took calculated risks throughout the innings while Labuschagne sat in. One of those Indian batsmen needed to get in and then look to score at a run a ball instead of going at 3 or 4 an over for half the match.

India didn't handle the pressure of expectation. You could see even before the game started that they were a bit pensive while Australia were beaming and excited for the opportunity. From the very first over in the field it was obvious that Australia was up for it and in the right mental state.

Definitely. There are certain teams/nations in all sports who seem to excel in the knockout stages of tournaments and the Australian cricket team are one of them. I guess it was a last hurrah for quite a few of that team as well who might decide that they are unlikely to be around in another 4 years and in the meantime can focus on other formats.

I never knew that Australia is good when it comes to cricket
I was always thinking of India and Pakistan alone
Congratulations to them

India had worked very hard in the World Cup and were not losing a single match but we saw that some of their players were former cricketers and they mocked the rest of the teams a lot because of that. We saw that inside the final they lost and the whole stadium became very sad and their prime minister looked very sad.

Although I am not really a fan of this sport I can get behind anyone being excited about any sport. It is my understanding that this was a pretty one-sided thing and that it was clear that Aus was going to win long before it was over. Is that true?

I would say the game was very much in the balance until about the 3/4 mark. That's when the Australian partnership had established itself and started to run away with the game.
